Frank Ready to Start the Next Chapter at Cal

Ever since camping at Cal, appropriately named 6-7/290 Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, CA) High School offensive tackle Cal Frank could see his future in Berkeley. The big 2-way lineman was a standout at camp and caught veteran offensive line coach Steve Greatwood’s eye right away.

“My interest in Cal was established after my first visit there last spring,” said Frank. “We took a tour of the campus and athletic facilities and Coach Greatwood went over some of my game film with me. I found that this was very impactful towards my decision because it showed me how great a coach he is.”

Frank planned to announce his commitment to Cal after the Big Game scheduled to be played today at Memorial Stadium but poor air conditions due to the ongoing Camp Fire in Paradise delayed the game for two weeks. Frank and his family rescheduled the visit for the Big Game on 12/1 and moved forward with his commitment anyway.

“I have a few cousins and close family friends that went to Cal, and they were very excited to hear that I am going next year,” said Frank. “My parents especially were ecstatic about my decision to enroll in this outstanding university. I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive family.”

“Coach Greatwood is an outstanding coach and I am extremely excited to start working with him,” said Frank. “After experiencing his coaching style at camp, I know that I will be able to excel under his guidance. And after seeing the players the coaches have been recruiting, I believe I will fit in perfectly with the culture of the team.”

Frank’s commitment comes at a tumultuous time, with the idyllic community of Thousand Oaks suffering a pair of horrific disasters in recent weeks, with the mass shootings at Borderline Bar and Grill and the displacement of thousands of people from their homes due to the Woolsey Fire in their vicinity.

“We had to evacuate last Thursday,” said Frank. “Fortunately most of my teammates’ houses survived along with my place. There are few kids who are still on mandatory evac. Unfortunately a kid from my old high school, who was attending Cal Lutheran, was working at the club and was killed, and many of my teammates knew someone who was involved in the shooting incident.

“The shooting and fire have been very hard on our community, but we are all coming together and supporting each other. Everyone has been doing their part and more in the rebuilding process, and the strength shown by my teammates and classmates is inspiring.”

Despite the tragedies, Oaks Christian pulled off an exciting Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinal win over a loaded JSerra squad in San Juan Capistrano last weekend, winning 35-34. The 12-1 Lions suffered their first loss of the season yesterday, falling to national #1 St. John Bosco.

An excellent student, Frank hopes to study business at Cal and plans on reporting June 23rd for summer session.

He is a PWO although his family's financial situation allowed him to eschew the need for scholarships and focus on schools he wanted rather than the other way around. This is in many respects a bonus scholarship player for us in 2019

Guesses about his playing weight?

Isn't he about the same size as when Curran started?

When Langston Walker was an incoming freshman, I talked with him briefly at a Cal fan day. I was awed by his size and how muscular he was, at 6' 8", 285 (my memory) and I figured he would play right away.

Instead, we he started, he was at about 330 and went up from there.

Are there different trends these days with the spread offenses, etc.?

Anyone want to, er, weigh in?

Edit: Also, anyone think he'll be a DL?
