BROOKLYN, N.Y. (AP) -- A gritty battle in Brooklyn came down to the final few possessions, and St. John's slipped by the Golden Bears, 82-79, on Monday evening at the Barclays Center.

Cal moves on to face the winner of VCU/Temple in the third-place game of the GotPrint.com Legends Classic by Old Trapper, set for 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET.

Three Bears scored in double figures, led by Darius McNeill's 21 points, including a 5-for-10 clip from beyond the arc. Justice Sueing scored 14 of his 19 in the second half, and Paris Austin chipped in 17 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Both teams battled for the lead with a two-point swing in the final five minutes. During that stretch, St. John's led by as many as four points, but Calcontinued to chip away at the lead, bringing the game within one point at the 1:28 mark.

Shamorie Ponds had 16 of his season-high 32 points in the final seven minutes. Ponds made 11 of 15 from the field, including three 3-pointers, and 7 of 7 from the free-throw line -- including six in the final 2 1/2 minutes. It's the 6-foot-1 junior's seventh career game scoring at least 30 points.

Ponds scored the first seven points during an 11-3 run that gave St. John's a 69-68 lead with 3:52 left. LJ Figueroa made two free throws and then, after a steal by Ponds, chased down two offensive rebounds before his putback capped the stretch. Juhwan Harris-Dysons layup trimmed Cal's deficit to 75-74 with 1:28 left but Ponds answered with a 3 and after Sueing hit a jumper, Ponds made two foul shots to make it 80-76 with 19 seconds left.
