One of two 2020 recruits to commit to the Bears almost a year ago today, Newberry Park quarterback Ben Gulbranson has opted to reopen his commitment.

The 6-3/210 junior missed half the season with injury, going 58-for-99 (58%) for 712 yards, with 7 touchowns and 5 interceptions on the season.

Gulbranson announced his decision this evening via Twitter:

The Bears have extended several QB offers since the 2018 season ended, including 6-4/190 Rancho Cucamonga QB CJ Stroud, 6-4/210 New Jersey QB Michael Alaimo and 6-1/185 Calabasas HS -a summer commit to Fresno State. Another high target for the Bears is 6-6/175 Liberty-Brentwood QB Jay Butterfield -one of the Bears’ earliest offerees.

Gulbranson also has offers from Arizona State and San Jose State.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Moraga/Greg, is this mutual? Did his development lag behind expectations? Or did he just see Cal recruiting over him? Curious for any insights or opinions..

I don't think they'd have straight out dropped him but they were definitely looking to add the best QB possible in addition. He didn't have a very good junior season and he didn't play for a good team, so that didn't help.

To me it sure looks like he saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to look elsewhere.
His junior season certainly far from spectacular
