I read the article on the Cal Men's tennis team match vs ASU, and was surprised to find the doubles teams played only one set, instead of two out of three sets. Just curious, but is this the norm for college tennis? If so why is it not two out of three sets like in singles matches? A doubles tennis match is not particularly strenuous physical activity. Has tennis sunk to the low participation times for athletes like has happened in football and basketball? Basketball has almost countless timeouts for free throws, team timeouts, and commercial timeouts, so a player rarely has to expend much energy, only a few minutes, before there is a break and he can catch his breath. Football is not two way, offense and defense, so the most a player usually will play is half a game, and with most players now being specialists who only come in for a play or a few plays, there is not a lot of exertion for these athletes either.
