A week after his departure as head coach at Cal Poly, former Cal OC named Cal running backs coach Nick Edwards as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach for the Mustangs.

He also named former Cal grad assistant (2016-2018) Casey Petree tight ends and co-special teams coordinator Most recently, Petree was a quality control coach at SMU, working with safeties and special teams.

Baldwin said of the hires:

"I am so excited to add a combination of both experience and knowledge and an overall true passion for not just teaching these guys on the field, but also making sure the players do the right thing and are good role models for the student-athletes.

"Each one of these coaches brings different things, different strengths to the table and will help to really round out our staff on the field, in the film room and out on the recruiting trail.”

Edwards coached receivers at Cal under Baldwin in 2017 and 2018 before moving to running backs coach last season.

Cal head coach Justin Wilcox had good things to say about Edwards.

“I think he will do great,” he said. “I am really excited for NIck. He’s done a great job for us. HEe has had a couple of different roles here. He is a young guy in the profession. He’s got a bright future. Myself, our players, other coaches just appreciate what he’s done. And we are glad he and Beau are going to be able to finish off with us at the bowl game, and we look forward to sending them out the right way.”

Edwards also coached receivers at Eastern Washington under Baldwin from 2014 to 2016 after starring as a receiver for the Eagles as a player.

Edwards’ departure would seem to make it somewhat easier to lure a new OC to Cal with a clear slot to name at least one assistant coach of his choosing.

Wilcox has indicated that a new OC could be announced in the next couple of weeks.
