6-8/218 IMG Academy (Bradenton, Florida) SF Grant Newell‍ was one of two 2022 players to sign with the Bears this week, joining Nigerian by way of Ireland forward ND Okafor‍.

Rated the 53rd small forward nationally and 3 stars by ESPN, Newell took an official visit to Cal two weeks ago and saw enough on his trip to convince him that Cal was the right spot for him.

“I went to Cal on October 29-31 for my official visit,” said Newell. “I really liked it. It was a really good fit. Seeing the team practice, hanging out with the players, being around the coaches. Everyone made good impressions and they were keeping it real. It’s also a great school academically and I liked what I saw. It’s definitely a good opportunity for me.”

Both players were introduced on signing day on Wednesday.

“We’re excited to welcome ND and Grant, who are high-quality young men with the talent to step in and contribute to our basketball program right away,” said Cal head coach Mark Fox. “Both ND and Grant bring elite athleticism to the court and will be great players to coach starting in the 2022-23 season.

"Grant's versatility and ability to handle the ball on the perimeter is really impressive. Similar to ND, Grant's size and length will create advantageous matchups for our team and he is a quality shooter from the forward position."

Newell’s coach Chad Meyers offered some clarity on Newell’s recruiting and his decision to take a post grad year at IMG:

“Grant is a strong, athletic wing,” said Meyers. “He has really improved his shooting and playmking ability. He was very under the radar after missing his senior season due to covid.

“He’ll be able to play both forward spots at the next level as well as guard all five positions on the floor.”

Newell’s relationship with the staff, particulary assistant coach Andrew Francis also played a big role in his decision.

“Coach Francis was my main recruiter,” said Newell. “We’ve been really, really close. He came down to see me. He was really consistent throughout the process. The other coaches were good with me, too. They’re all really good guys.”

Newell is currently attending IMG Academy in Bradendon, Florida doing postgraduate studies this semester after graduating from Whitney Young High School in Chicago.

“It's been going good,” said Newell of his experience at presigious IMG. “We’ve played two games so far. It’s going good for me and my teammates. I think it’s going to be a good year. It’s been good for my development.”

Newell brings a wide wingspan and loads of athleticism to the program, much like fellow signee Okafor.

“I’d say one of the best things in my game is my versatility,” said Newell. “I can handle the ball, I can shoot two and threes, with the midrange game or perimeter or take it to the basket with athletic finishes. I have a high motor and play good defense. I can do everything.”

As for his goals when he arrives at Cal, Newell noted:  “I’m looking mainly to keep improving and getting better and making a name for myself. Just helping the team get better and win. That’s the most important thing.”
