LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal women's basketball team improved to 4-0 thanks in large part to a stellar night on the free throw line. The Bears (4-0) finished the evening going 20-for-25 from the charity stripe and held on for a 10-point win over host UC San Diego, winning 64-54 on Saturday afternoon at RIMAC Arena.

Cal had three players in double figures and were led by Jayda Curry who tallied a game-high 20 points. She was 6-for-18 from the field and just 1-for-6 from beyond the arc, but was 7-for-8 from the line. She also had a season-high seven assists and four rebounds.

Joining Curry in double figures was Evelien Lutje Schipholt who had her third double-double of the season, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Cailyn Crocker had 11 points and logged all 40 minutes.

UC San Diego (2-2) had three in double figures and was led by Parker Montgomery's team-high 14 points. Sydney Brown had 13 and Alex Obouh Fegue had 12.

Cal had another up and down night shooting the ball. In the opening half they connected on 34.5 percent from the field in the first half, going 10-for-29. In the second half, the Bears shot just 30.0 percent from the field going 9-for-30 from the floor.

The Triton's finished the night 19-for-68, but a torrid third period saw them connect on 50.0 percent of their attempts, including four 3-point field goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED

With a two-point lead in the fourth quarter, back-to-back field goals by Jazlen Green gave the Bears a six-point cushion, going up 55-49.

After a pair of free throws by UCSD, Cal responded with a bucket in the paint by Lutje Schipholt and a jumper from Curry giving the Bears an eight-point lead with under three to play. From there Curry put the game away, making six-consecutive free throws.

UP NEXT
