Fall Camp Day 3 Report
MEMORIAL STADIUM -Fall camp 2022 day three started on the gloomier side at Memorial, but the Bears brought their typical enthusiasm and energy regardless in shoulder pads and shorts.
Maintaining a similar flow and structure to the first couple days of camp, each room did their position drills and conditioning in different parts of the field while incorporating 7x7s and 11x11s throughout the morning session.
Attendance was relatively low, with only a handful of observers watching from the stands; however, like the previous days, the physical and verbal responses from the players following key plays and moments were electric.
Aside from throwing one interception in 1-on-1s secured by senior safety Daniel Scott and getting sacked by PWO frosh DE Elijah Dias, RS junior QB Jack Plummer had a great morning, connecting consistently with his receivers and converting on pass plays.
Some highlights from Plummer included a 25 yard completion to Jeremiah Hunter, 20 yards for a touchdown to Jermaine Terry, a 12-yard touchdown to J. Michael Sturdivant in tight coverage, 12 yards to Keleki Latu for a touchdown, another 15-yard pass to Latu in traffic, and a throw to Tommy Christakos who made an impressive diving back shoulder grab. Plummer also showed his adaptability and movement, racking up 15 yards on a quarterback draw.
Potential starting QB contender Kai Milner connected with Jeremiah Hunter for a 20-yard touchdown grab in the back of the endzone. QB Zach Johnson, who seems to be sitting 3rd in the depth chart for now, threw two interceptions, both picked off by freshman cornerback Jeremiah Earby. Earby’s ability to come up with the INT not once but twice helps prove his reliability and presence as a young defender.
Apart from the quarterbacks, senior RB DeCarlos Brooks had a nice run for 10 yards up the middle, and OLB Myles Williams landed a sack on a blitz.
Overall the bears seem to be getting into the groove and the swing of things again. While there is still much to improve on, the work ethic and determination of the team are incredibly evident from the start of practice to the end.
“We’ve been in this system 5-6 years with the same terminology so you’re seeing with some of the veterans, the install goes fast,” said Sirmon. “I think we have 22-23 different concepts in in the first three days. As the offense puts more in, the multiples get bigger.
“We’re always looking for guys to play under control. I refer to it as playing behind your hands, striking blocks, getting off blocks. But really, it’s the mastery of alignment, assignment, technique, and then playing under control. You can’t play reckless in practice.”
