Ott Wins Pac-12 Freshman of the Week in Cal Debut

September 6, 2022

Cals Jaydn Ott made one of the top debuts in Cal history by rushing for 104 yards on 17 carries and adding another 26 yards on two catches including a touchdown reception in the Golden Bears' season-opening 34-13 win over UC Davis.

Ott became the first Cal player with 100 rushing yards or more in his debut for the school since Shane Vereen had 101 in Cal's 2008 opener against Michigan State, while Ott's 130 yards from scrimmage were the most by a player in his Cal debut since Keenan Allen had 158 in his 2010 debut for the Golden Bears, also against UC Davis.

Ott came into Cal as the nation's No. 14 running back (Rivals) in the recruiting class of 2022, a consensus four-star recruit and the MaxPreps Big XIII League Back of the Year as a 2021 senior at Norco High School.

He was the first Cal player to win this award since Lu-Magia Hearns III won in Week 12 of last season and the first Cal offensive player to win since the award was created in 2019.

Also nominated:  Tetairoa McMillan, WR, Arizona; Raleek Brown, RB, USC; Carter Brown, K, Arizona State; Damien Martinez, RB, Oregon State; Mudia Reuben, WR, Stanford

Additional conference winners were Jayden de Laura, Arizona (offense), Jaydon Grant (defense), Oregon State Carter Brown (special teams), Arizona State, Brandon Kipper, Oregon State (OL), Jalen Harris, Arizona (DL)

Ott just seems to glide a la Russell White.

I can't wait to see him rip one off for 50 yards and see when he gets into another gear.

Hope we spread it around though -- we have three solid backs in Moore, Ott and Street.

Glide is spot on. He looks effortless out there and i was surprised with his overall strength and willingness to smash. He's going to be an absolute joy to watch and I'm so glad he's a Bear.

Pac-12 awards were given to a Jaydn, Jayden and Jaydon! What are the chances?

**** matters. There is a huge jump in talent from 3 to 4 stars. 5 stars are even rarer occurrence at Cal. Not so at $C, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, or Notre Dame.

He seems to have good vision and ability to hit a hole quickly when it's open.

I like to think I'm as excited as everyone else is. Ott certainly looked the part on Saturday, and overall I think our depth at RB is pretty darned good.

But, please be cautious about putting too much into his first game. Remember, UCD isn't Notre Dame, nor $C etc. etc. He's young and he's going to be even better, for sure (barring injuries) next year. He'll be MUCH better if we get our OL to perform well enough to let him be all he can be. Let's see what he can do against UNLV, and Notre Dame. I hope he just amazes us even more as the season moves on, and I believe he can. He certainly deserved the recognition. Let's see if he can keep it up against better competition.

Should be some fun!

Don't sleep on DeCarlos Brooks. He played well last year and this past game. Also, we have yet to see the Ashtons (Stredick and Hayes).

Not concerned about our backs, but can't say the same about our offensive line. They need to set up their game or it could be a lonnnnnnnggggg season.

Can change speeds very well and is patient to find the right lane to follow. Love his footwork to side step/accelerate as well. Also a very mature young man for not being 20 yrs old until this December. Organized, respectful and also fun to engage in conversation, regardless of topic - great Cal student athlete representative!

I actually was thinking of DeCarlos Brooks rather than Street. Street didn't even get in. Stredick had two carries though.

Street was in a knee brace

Wow one game. Ott was given the opportunity and he did well. What about Moore? Just tossed him aside. I wonder if other RBs could do well if given the same opportunity.
