Devin Askew Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

BOULDER, Colo. – California men’s basketball junior guard Devin Askew underwent sports hernia surgery on Wednesday and will miss the remainder of the 2022-23 season, head coach Mark Fox announced Thursday. Askew’s surgery was successful and he is expected to make a full recovery.

“I am disappointed for Devin because he loves to play,” Fox said. “Our team will rally again to support him in recovery. We are encouraged that the procedure went well and he will make a full recovery in time to have a full offseason.”

Askew averaged a team-leading 15.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in 13 games played (all starts) this season, but missed eight of Cal’s past 12 contests due to either injury or illness. He scored 17-plus points eight times, including back-to-back games with career highs of 23 against USC on Nov. 30 and 25 at then-No. 4 Arizona on Dec. 4. The Sacramento native is in his first season with the Golden Bears after starting his college career at Kentucky in 2020-21 and playing his sophomore year at Texas in 2021-22.

Cal is back in action tonight at Colorado. Tipoff from the CU Events Center in Boulder is at 7 p.m. PST/8 p.m. MST on the Pac-12 Network.

I hope he has a smooth recovery. Just wondering- did he aggravate it during the oregon state game? playing him 33 mins in his first game in quite a while might've done it

I'm wishing Devin a successful recovery and hoping everybody keeps this situation entirely separate from the situation with the coaching staff. (Talking to you, Mr. Knowlton.)

Yes get well Devin.

Did he really need to play 30 minutes in his one game return from his injury? I just thought that was bad news.

He deserves at least two more years to allow these guys to recover.

So he's out for several games then plays one and is out for the season. Who's bright idea was it to allow him to get injured again?

He played Askew when he shouldn't have. The team Dr was either ignored or should be fired with the rest of them. This wont last..

As far as I know, it is standard convention in D1 basketball to close all practices to the public, and has been this way for many years. I guess the idea is to keep opponents from doing advance scouting on opponents. Coaches can have guests at the practices, as both Mike Montgomery and Ben Braun as TV announcers have visited at least one Fox practice each at Cal. The last Cal practice I visited was during the reign of Jim Padgett. I went to many Pete Newell practices in 1959-60, when Cal was runnerup in the NCAA. Newell could care less who watched his practices. Even with open practices, his teams lost very few games. Can you name a single D1 school this season who has held practices open to the public?

34 minutes, most on the team, after missing nearly a month. He shot 2-12, 1-5 from 3 (but 7 assists), so it is not like he was on fire and that warranted playing him so long, though we are pretty thin at guard. Plus, it was a 20 point loss so….

Cal basketball: just when you think it can't get any worse, it does.
Need to move on from Fox yesterday.
