The Bears started off the portal season with a bang with the commitment of San Diego State safety and MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Patrick McMorris.

The 6-0/210 redshirt senior safety is the younger brother of former Cal fan favorite Malik McMorris, who thrilled crowds with his jarring hits at fullback for the Bears from 2015-18, also adding 15 career catches for 110 yards and four touchdowns to his resume. McMorris is back with the Bears as a grad assistant on defense.

McMorris came to SDSU in 2019 from Santa Ana High School where he totaled 1,801 yards and 23 touchdowns on 141 carries (12.8 avg.) in 2018, along with 17 passes for 375 yards (22.1 avg.) and another 2 TDs. On defense, McMorris added 99 tackles and two interceptions.

As a redshirt soph in 2021, McMorris had a standout season with 90 tackles, 4 interceptions and 1 fumble recovery for the Aztecs in his 1st Team All-MWC season. As a redshirt junior, he had 61 tackles, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery along with 5 passes defended.

He will join Nohl Williams (UNLV) and Kaylin Moore (Colorado) as portal transfers for the 2023 season as well as JC transfer Matt Littlejohn as seasoned players added to the Bears’ secondary.
