Bears Add Purdue Grad Transfer RB King Doerue

May 20, 2023

The Bears added more depth to the running back room with the addition of Purdue grad transfer RB King Doerue this morning. The 5-10/205 RB was the Boilermakers leading rusher for two seasons and led the team in rushing in 2022 with 533 yards on 135 carries with a pair of rushing touchdowns, also catching 120 passes for 156 yards in six starts and 12 games played last season.

Rated a high 3 star prospect out of Tascosa High School in Amarillo, Texas, Doerue had a strong offer list that included Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Nebraska, TCU, Baylor, Texas A&M and more before committing to Purdue in 2019. As a true freshman in 2019. Doerue had an impressive 7 TD, with 5 on the ground and 2 through the air.

Doerue is the fourth portal or grad transfer addition at running back, joining fellow grad transfer Isaiah Ifanse and portal transfers Byron Cardwell and Justin Williams-Thomas, replacing portal departures Chris Street, DeCarlos Brooks, Damien Moore and Ashton Hayes and offers additional injury insurance with Cardwell and Williams-Thomas recovering from offseason injuries.

Doerue announces commitment to Cal at youth camp

makes me concerned of the availability of the high 4* Cardwell and the ArmyAAA JWT?

Maybe someone knows more:Are there indications that JWT already a hold out for the season to recover? As it stands we have 5 starting RBs and a system that will use 2 backs quite a lot...but 5? + the frosh+ Stendrick

They lost as many as they bought it, the last grad transfers being one year guys for depth. It's possible one of the earlier commits could miss this season but it's highly unlikely both will. Both of them have 3 years of eligibility left.

Great get for Cal if healthy. Was Purdue's staring RB before injury. Two years left. Although I see that recent Houston commit OL Sylvester is now headed to Louisville. That was fast.

First, welcome to Cal, King! We hope this works out great for you! Go Bears!

Second, maybe we're good on the backs; how about more guys to block for them?

One doesn't have anything to do with the other...Cardwell probably out for the year, so they were replacing on that front...

Let's get some OL and DL!

We have enough DL for about 3 starting line ups, actually.
Mckenzie is back as crucial NG. Unless, again, high impact Wilkins B Johnson, Akili Calhoun miss another season

Remarkable, what we all knew, the right OC gets an abundance of talent to round out the O exisitng talent.

Taj Davis is same length/seemingly similar separation speed of JMS...that we were all hoping for to be opposite one of the premier contested ball , hands receivers in football- Hunter. thank goodness Spav can threaten to take the top off without it being the speed of M Anderson but limited ability to present as open downfield at 5'11" ?

Moraga or Greg stated another grad OL is visiting nest week...experienced depth at OL is an issue:

I wonder how Tx A&M is viewing their OL sitch, 3 yrs of the #1,2,3 recruiting classes and they lose Wykoff to CAL, and were a disaterss upfront last year. preseason #4 I think, & they won 4 games, correct. I believe part of it was due to OL. That's with a $9mol /yr HC and unlimited NIL, that even SAban complains that they are a pro team that can sign any free agent and it is not fair!

Problem is we are missing on out on the other though, too little focus on one and not the other

How anyone who also is on the Insider board can walk away with the idea that there's too little focus on the OL is a head-scratcher, particularly if you read sebastabear's posts about it. It's always been priority 1A, 1B and 1C. They're just hard to get and they're not doing a good enough job of it. The money is there and the desire is there. There's certainly no lack of focus there.

But then again, this is a commitment thread on a new running back commit yet most of the thread is about where are the OL? We get it. They get it, too.

I like his strength. As a Freshman he showed a lot of power breaking tackles and dragging tacklers

Because they land a RB that translates into less focus on OL? Operationally, can you explain what you believe is going on? Bloesch is getting pulled into RB recruiting? The people who are full time recruiting managers have/had a bigger list for RB than they do O-linemen?
MB answered it well, but you seem to have some inside info?

There is this tendency to view recruiting as a purely deterministic process: i.e. you decide what/who you want, put forth the effort, and get them. In fact, it's not like picking stuff off the shelf at Safeway. It's more like that loaf of bread has 40 different people grabbing for it and the bread gets to decide whose shopping cart to jump into.

Well said...and to extend the metaphor...if you need two loaves of bread, doesn't mean you still can't also pick up a gallon of milk, or for that matter, does getting the bread distract from you remembering to get the milk.

Here in the east, you have to bring your own bags...which I guess, is a nice metaphor for number of scholarships overall...

Isn't it a bit ironic to criticize Cal fans who hope for a successful season as if we are crazy by showing a clip of a movie where the kids made tinfoil hats to protect themselves from aliens who were IN FACT just outside their house.

The kids in this movie were right. And the doubting grownups who ridiculed them were wrong.

Let's hope that the Cal fans who expect a successful season will be proven correct and the doubters will be proven wrong.

BTW I love "Signs"

[Okay, I was mocking BearHunter but not for his shaky "hope for a successful season" so much as to call attention to his not understanding my what-I-thought-was-clear post. He questioned my apparent conflict between my initial 4-win prediction verse my 5-win prediction. He massively missed my contention that Cal could potentially win 5 games if a certain circumstance occurred, where the opponents' bread and butter starting QB couldn't start.]

The kids in this movie were right. And the doubting grownups who ridiculed them were wrong.

[I could construe from what your ridiculing post above as implying you're right that Cal will have a tremendous win-loss record next season and doubting grownups, such as myself, will be proven to be wrong.]

Let's hope that the Cal fans who expect a successful season will be proven correct and the doubters will be proven wrong. [Such an outcome would be a delightful surprise....but...albeit highly unlikely.]

BTW I love "Signs"I (sic)

It looks like we need to make another hat!
