Cal To Face San Diego State In SoCal Showcase

BERKELEY – The California men’s basketball team will face 2023 NCAA runner-up San Diego State on Saturday, Nov. 25, in the SoCal Showcase – a neutral-site game hosted at The Pavilion in San Juan Capistrano.

The non-conference contest will pit the Golden Bears and Aztecs against one another for the first time since 2018. Television/streaming details, fan experience information and the game time will be announced at a later date.

Cal and San Diego State have met 13 times prior, with the Aztecs owning a 7-6 all-time advantage. The Bears won the most recent pair of meetings; 63-62 on Dec. 9, 2017, in San Diego and 89-83 on Dec. 8, 2018, in Berkeley. San Diego State advanced to the NCAA title game last season and has reached three consecutive NCAA Tournaments.

The SoCal Showcase will be hosted at the same site as the SoCal Challenge – a multi-team event featuring Cal, Bradley, UTEP and Tulane – which will be played earlier the same week on Nov. 20 and 22.

I'd be interested in knowing why we are playing SDSU in a 2,000 seat high school gym that is 60 miles north of SDSU's campus. SDSU's arena seats 12,000 and they have far more season ticket holders than could fit in JSerra's gym.

Neutral site.

Neutral site.

Even if the idea is to play at a neutral site in SoCal, there are at least half a dozen better options in Orange or San Diego Counties.

But those venues aren't hosting the event.

It is an odd (like very odd) place to play and host a tournament. Of course I am sure that ESPN or Fox's fingerprints are on it.

Better for us not to be playing in Stinkin State arena
Go Bears!

Agreed. TV.
BTW The Maui Classic/invitational is played in basically a High school size gym too.

True. But Maui I get. Isn't the population well under 200k. But this is orange county, with a pop over 3.5 million and has some decent sislzed arenas around

Maui County (includes Moloka'i and Lana'i) population is around 166,000 but they average more than 60,000 visitors a day.

I think your point is more than valid. The other difference for Maui is that few fans of the invited teams live on Maui or will fly to Maui for the games, but Orange County is home or within driving distance of huge numbers of Cal and San Diego State alums.

If we cancelled football would we still have to pay Wilcox?
Go Bears!

TBD, but likely overlapping at least and probably 2 hrs to get from one to the other…. Pretty sure SoCal Cal fans will need to choose one or the other
