Cal Field Hockey Wins First Conference Championship, Earns NCAA Tournament Berth
BERKELEY – Hours after winning its first America East title, the California field hockey team found out its selection in the 2023 NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening.
The Golden Bears (12-7, 5-3 America East) will travel to Evanston, Ill., to play Miami, Ohio (14-7, 6-1 MAC) on Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT.
Cal finished the regular season on an eight-game winning streak, including a three-game surge in the America East Tournament that culminated with a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 win in overtime over defending champion UAlbany in the title match.
Wednesday will mark the Bears' 11th trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since the 2006 season when they lost to Ohio State 3-1 in the first round.
The Redhawks come into the NCAA Tournament after claiming its sixth consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament championship on Saturday by defeating Kent State 3-1.
Cal and Miami (OH) met earlier this year on Aug. 25 at Underhill Field with the Redhawks earning a 2-0 victory. Wednesday will be the seventh all-time meeting between the two programs.
The winner of Wednesday’s contest will advance to face the host and No. 2-seed Northwestern on Friday at 11 a.m. PT.
