Bears Stay Hot on the Recruiting Trail with Northwestern OT Flip, Aiden Newbill

Days after a midweek visit that ended Friday, the Bears secured a commitment from 6-8/285 Pflugerville Connally offensive tackle Aiden Newbill‍. The Texas 5A all-offense second team OT also holds offers from Northwestern, SMU, Texas State and UNLV and was committed to Northwestern before flipping to Cal. Though still long and lean, the senior OT added 65 pounds since last season and appears to have the frame to fill into a prototypical OT. 

“Cal was a mix of both incredible people, a great football program that’s on the rise, and a prestigious business school,” Newbill said of his commitment to Cal.

The commitment was the fifth secured by the Bears in the last few days, joining Trinity Valley CC soph safety Isaiah Crosby‍, who committed today as well as Stanford OLB flip Luke Ferrelli‍, senior grad transfer QB Chandler Rogers‍ and 2025 SoCal OLB Carter Jones‍. He’s the 18th prep, JC and portal commit of the 2024 class and joins Texas OT Tyler Knape‍ in the ‘24 Cal OL recruiting class.

He's a really good prospect. There's only so many 6-8 OTs out there. He was asked to chop block a lot in his HS scheme and showed surprisingly quick and nimble feet in doing so. It's also impressive to see someone that size willingly going to the turf repeatedly shows toughness. Like all HS OL his punch timing, placement, and strength could use some development but once he gets a hold of a guy he's not losing them.

At 6-8 280, I'd like to see him work out at TE as he fills out and be used as a 6th blocker in short yardage situations, with the occasional 5 yard out for a first down or TD.
