Celestine, Tyson Push Bears Past Huskies

Celestine Knocks Down Game-Winning 3-Pointer With 5 Seconds Remaining

SEATTLE (AP) – Jaylon Tyson scored 28 points and Jalen Celestine sank a go-ahead 3-pointer with five seconds left to help California rally for an 82-80 victory over Washington on Saturday night.

The Golden Bears (11-15, 7-8 Pac-12) trailed 75-70 with 4:23 left to play before staging their comeback. Grant Newell scored back-to-back baskets to get Cal within a point. Celestine answered two free throws by Sahvir Wheeler with two of his own and then buried a 3-pointer after a bucket by the Huskies' Keion Brooks Jr. to knot the score at 79 with 1:40 to play.

Wheeler made the second of two free throws with 1:16 remaining, but he turned the ball over on a steal by Cone with 15 seconds left and Celestine buried his game winner coming out of a timeout.

Tyson made 11 of 20 shots with two 3-pointers, adding six assists for the Bears. Jalen Cone scored 14. Fardaws Aimaq totaled 13 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out. Keonte Kennedy had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Brooks finished with 26 points to lead the Huskies (14-12, 6-9). Koren Johnson added 16 points, Wheeler scored 15 with seven boards and Moses Wood scored 11.

Tyson had 21 points in the first half as Cal took a 42-38 lead into intermission.

Wheeler had back-to-back layups and Paul Mulcahy followed with a 3-pointer as Washington regained the lead 47-46 with 16:15 left to play. It was a one-possession game until Brooks hit a 3-pointer to put the Huskies up 61-55 with 10:44 remaining.

Cal snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Huskies and evened the all-time series at 88 wins apiece.

The Huskies beat the Golden Bears on the road 77-75 in January on Wood's basket at the buzzer.

Cal hosts Oregon State next Thursday in Berkeley. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST in Haas Pavilion.

Tyson was dominating the first half, scoring on all three levels. Then in the second half, UW's zone shut him down, and then he was playing hurt the last 4-5 minutes. But although he didn't score he handed out 6 dimes, including the game winner where the entire defense collapsed on him, and instead of forcing up an ugly shot, made a perfect pass right where Celestine likes it for the dagger

Lots of heros in this game. Daws with the double-double scoring 13 points on 6-12 shooting and 14 rebounds

Grant playing center when Daws fouled out, and scoring two clutch points in crunch time

Celestine with 8 points and the game winner after going 0-5 up to that point

Keonte "the Bandet" Kennedy with 12 points, including the half-time buzzer beater fall away, NINE rebounds, lock down defense, and two steals

Cone with 14 points and the critical play where he was trying to keep the ball alive with two defenders pushing, grabbing and bumping him (he was fouled)

And don't forget Maddog who called the timeout to save the steal and breakaway

Every one of those plays were needed to get the W

Tyson got an unselfish 28. I thought there were a number of times where he could've continued to shoot from the same spot as his previous basket, but then he would bring it back out and try something else. I was like, "Keep shooting until they show they can stop you!".

Here is what one talent evaluator said about Tyson.

Tyson's role at Cal has been very ball-dominant and it's hard to predict how effective he will be off the ball at the NBA level. He's had a massive season at Cal and his case as a first-round pick will only continue to grow after a 28-point performance in a close win over Washington on Feb. 17. He's a high-volume shooter (attempting 16 shots per game) but as teams start to double-team him or force the ball out of his hands, Tyson is finding his teammates, averaging 4.7 assists in the last eight games.

One thing with Tyson that stands out (although advanced stats could prove me wrong), is that he doesn't seem to get to the line very often considering how much he handles the ball.

They can just watch his Texas Tech footage where he shot 40% from 3.

if you watch closely (not sure exact time on clock), he pulled up like he did in some previous games.

In one of those game he tried to return, but pulled up so badly he had to be helped off the court.

I don't know what his specific injury is, as it seems more than just a cramp, but it seems like it's the kinda injury that can get aggravated when he explodes on a drive, or jumps
