Cal Softball Weekend Sweep
PHOENIX – The California softball team racked up 10 hits on the way to a 9-4 victory over Memphis on Sunday at the GCU Softball Stadium to close out an undefeated weekend at the Littlewood Classic.
Acacia Anders, Elon Butler and Alyssa Herrera recorded two hits apiece to pace the Golden Bears (10-1).
Cal got on the board first in the top of the second, scoring two runs on two hits and two Tiger errors, the big one coming on Herrera's first collegiate RBI when she drove in Tianna Bell with a single.
Ryann Orange made her first career start for the Bears in the circle and had a clean first frame before running into trouble in the second. Back-to-back RBI doubles gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead as Cal went to the bullpen for Annabel Teperson.
Anders got the run right back to start the third, scoring Kaylee Pond with an RBI double and it was 3-3 heading to the fourth. Anders tacked on another in the fourth, lacing an RBI single to put Cal back in front.
Herrera came through once again in the fifth with her second RBI hit of the day, a single to score Mika Lee after she walked and stole second base. Leading 5-3, Cal put three more runs on the board in the sixth with a Butler RBI double, Tiger error and a wild pitch.
Kyndal Todd added one more Cal run with an RBI double in the seventh and Teperson closed out the game in the bottom half to earn her second win of the season. Teperson went 6.0 innings and gave up just one run while striking out seven Tigers.
