Bears Add Maryland Portal Tight End Corey Dyches
The Bears picked up an experienced pass-catching tight end in the port with the commitment today of 6-2/220 redshirt junior TE Corey Dyches. An honorable mention All-Big Ten player as a soph, Dyches will fill the athletic, pass-catching tight end role that former JC transfer Marquis Montgomery was meant to play when they brought him in last season before he hit the portal today with two catches last season.
Dyches starred for nearby Potomac High School in Oxen Hill, Maryland as a prep, choosing the Terps over North Carolina, Pitt, Syracuse, Boston College and more in 2020 after hauling 51 catches for 1126 yards (24.8 ypc) and 19 TDs as a senior.
The number four ranked receiver in catches in 2023, Dyches totaled 49 catches for 491 yards and 2 TDs as a junior, good for eighth in overall receptions in the Big Ten last season and the most for conference tight ends.
A two-sport star in high school, Dyches averaged 12.5 points and 11 rebounds as just a sophomore on the hardcourt and came to Maryland intending to play both sports. He became the first player to earn All-Metro in both football and basketball in over a decade, leading his football team to the state championship game as a senior then hitting the hardcourt just four days later with a monster game of 32 points and 23 rebounds in Potomac’s season opener.
Dyches is the third portal or grad transfer commit of the late signing period, joining Michigan State OT transfer Braden Miller and Princeton MLB Liam Johnson. He becomes the 33rd overall commit for the 2024 recruiting class including transfers.
