Eight Bears Earn All-Pac-12 Honors
BERKELEY – The California baseball team had eight student-athletes voted on to the 2024 All-Pac-12 team as announced by the conference office Tuesday morning.
Juniors Caleb Lomavita and Peyton Schulze as well as freshmen infielders Jarren Advincula and PJ Moutzouridis were named to the all-conference Team. Relief pitchers Christian Becerra and Tyler Stasiowski were joined by outfielders Rodney Green Jr. and Seth Gwynn on the honorable mention list. Lomavita was also named to the All-Defensive Team. In six full seasons under head coach Mike Neu, Cal has earned 19 All-Pac-12 First Team Selections.
This is the third consecutive season Lomavita has earned all-conference honors and second time earning first-team accolades. The native of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, has steadily climbed up the Cal record book. With 37 career home runs, he sits seventh all-time in program history. His career-best 50 RBI this season has him one shy of cracking Cal’s top-10 single-season list. Lomavita is hitting .312 with a career-high 67 hits this season, and has also stolen 12 bases. Defensively, Lomavita is a big reason Cal only has 43 wild pitches on the season – and just one in May. He boasts a career-best .988 field percentage and has just one passed ball, the fewest in the Pac-12.
Schulze earns all-conference honors for the first time after putting up a career year. The native of Poway, Calif., is hitting a team-leading .324 with career highs in runs scored (32), hits (69), doubles (21), home runs (8), RBI (54), slugging percentage (.543), walks (20), and on-base percentage (.383). His 21 doubles are tied for seventh most in a single season in Cal history. In last Friday’s win over Washington, he hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 11th for Cal’s seventh walk-off win of the year.
Up the middle, the duo of Advincula and Moutzouridis has been a revelation. Advincula is second on the team with a .317 average, and his 65 hits are eighth all-time by a freshman at Cal. He has scored 41 runs, clubbed nine doubles, two triples, and four home runs while driving in 30. Since moving to the top of the lineup, the Bears are 19-10. Advincula is also one of the toughest hitters to strike out. He leads the Pac-12 and is 19th in the nation, striking out only every 12.1 at-bats.
Moutzouridis has played and started every game at shortstop for the Bears in 2024. He is hitting .300 and has scored 40 runs while clubbing 14 doubles, a triple, and six home runs. His 62 base hits are the ninth most by a freshman in Cal history. Moutzrouridis has more multi-hit games (21) than games with multiple strikeouts this season. He is hitting .408 to lead off an inning and .400 with runners in scoring position. His 14 two-out RBIs is third on the team.
This is the second time Green Jr. has earned all-conference honors. After a slow start, the Richmond native has rebounded to hit .263 on the year. Since April he has been hitting .303. His 14 home runs are tied for a career-high and he has 34 in his career, which is ninth all-time at Cal. Green Jr. is tied for seventh in home runs and sixth in the Pac-12 with 13 stolen bases. He has put up career-highs in runs scored (52), doubles (13), RBI (43), and on-base percentage (.407).
Gwynn was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week on April 22. For the year he is hitting .312 (43-for-138). He has played in 48 games making 38 starts. He has clubbed seven doubles and seven home runs on the year, in Pac-12 play he has hit five of his seven doubles and five of his seven home runs. Gwynn makes a habit of coming up clutch in big situations, hitting .354 with runners in scoring position. He had the game-winning hit in the walk-off win over Washington to complete the sweep over the Huskies.
Becerra and Stasiowski have formed a potent 1-2 punch in late innings for the Cal bullpen. Both pitchers have put up career bests with Becerra going 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA. In 50.0 innings pitched, he has held opponents to a .251 average. His 55 strikeouts is second on the team, and he has struck out 22 batters looking, which is tied for sixth in the Pac-12. Stasiowski has been tremendous in 2024. He has closed out 14 games and his four saves is tops on the team. For the year, he is 5-1 with a 2.10 ERA. In 34.1 innings pitched, he has allowed just eight earned runs while holding opponents to a .185 batting average. Stasiowski has inherited 32 base runners this season and has only allowed 14 to score – none since April 13.
Sixth-seeded Cal takes on the ninth-seeded Washington Huskies tonight at 7 p.m. in the opening round of pool play in the Pac-12 Baseball Championships. The game between the Bears and Huskies will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
