The Bears are staying hot on the recruiting trail, adding their fourth commitment of the 2025 class and their second ESPN Hoopgurls Top 100 player with the commitment of 5’5 Etiwanda point guard Aliyahna Morris today. The announcement followed her nationally-televised dominating Border League performance in her IE Eagles’ 73-64 win over LV Orange in a clash of California vs Nevada squads on ESPNU. Morris led her IE squad with 32 points, 5 steals and 2 rebounds in an impressive performance in the win.

“For the next four years, I’ll be attending the University of California Berkeley,” Morris announced after the game. “Go Bears!

“The coaching staff’s been amazing. The team is great out there and the visit went great. I feel like out of all the options I had out there, they fit me the best.

“I worked so hard. Just two years ago, I didn’t know I’d be in this position so I’m just happy I’m here today. The only one I can thank today is God. He’s been with me in all my ups and downs and I’m just so happy.

“They’re getting someone who is ready to do all the work...we’re going to be great. I’m just so excited to go work with Coach Charmin...she wasn’t just focused on the basketball aspect of me going to Cal. She’s worried about me as a student and my life and my relationship with God and I think that was most important. Coach Charmin made me feel accepted for everything I am and not just the player I am.”

Rated the #24 overall player in the 2025 class, Morris has started at point guard for one of the nation’s top programs since her freshman year. Her combination of ball handling, ability to get to the hole and smooth perimeter stroke as well as a tough and quick defender made Morris one of the more coveted recruits in the nation, holding offers from Duke, USC, Michigan, Illinois, Mississippi State and a host of Ivies, including Harvard, Yale and Princeton.

Playing alongside 5 star USC signee Kennedy Smith, Morris led her Etiwanda squad to an Open Division state championship win over Archbishop Mitty as a junior, finishing 32-3. Morris averaged 16.8 points, 5.4 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 steals.

The newest Bear announced her commitment on ESPN2 this afternoon, choosing the Bears over fellow finalists Duke and Yale. She’ll join 4 star Texas wing Taylor Barnes - the ESPN Hoopgurls #70 overall recruit, Kansas combo guard Grace McCallop and Detroit PG Isis Johnson-Musah in the Bears’ current 2025 recruiting class.

The Inland girls athlete of the week:

Name: Aliyahna Morris
School: Etiwanda
Sport: Basketball
Year: Senior
Noteworthy: Morris, a 5-foot-5 point guard who has signed with Cal, had a stellar week in leading the Eagles to three victories. Morris started by helping Etiwanda beat Sidwell Friends (Washington D.C.) 69-56 in the championship game of the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego. She followed with 36 points (two of her career high), eight rebounds, and six assists in a 79-56 victory over Carondelet at the Sabrina Ionescu SI20 showcase. Morris, whose nickname is Puff, capped the week with 22 points in a 65-26 win over Monache at Mater Dei's Kevin Kiernan Klassic showcase. Morris is a four-year starter who helped the program win back-to-back CIF State Open Division championships in 2023 and 2024.

Could we see a Morris, King, Twidale next year at the 1-3? Heck, we can outrun and outshoot everyone with those 3.

Now all we need to do is nail down an experienced Center from the portal...

cal fanatic: DEFENSE wins basket all games, the first half a decade of losing wbb with coach charmin wuz based on tryna outrun & outshoot opponents with undersized guards...that **** is NOT gonna work unless u wanna follow a 10-20 program

lulu plays good d, king plays non existent d & not sure about morris yet

Morris n undersized guard who was the California freshman, sophmore and junior of the years. She has led their team to two state championships over Mitty. And you don't want her.

morris is a special talent & got tremendous upside at the 1 for the bears

more than 1 undersized guard on the court tho is a recipe for a losing season

Re-reading this commitment…didn't realize we beat out USC.

Whoever is playing USC is my second favorite school. I hope Gottlieb doesn't see another final four. Petty? Sure. I'll embrace it.

Zahra King has not proven that she is a good shooter or even an adequate point guard. Her play is streaky and very inconsistent.

Just stop. She's a frosh. Tired of your negativity about a young player who's played limited minutes.

She can shoot. i've seen her in practice. she sometimes plays ut of control. but she can shoot.

If you go back to last year and base it on Stats then Lulu couldn't shoot either. Come and watch a practice.

CWSF, don't you get it? S71's analysis' are based solely on a stat sheet and a small sample size of eye test.

I hope that King will use Kayla as her model. There are times to facilitate and times to free lance.

I think many of us get it; it just becomes tiresome. I remember what it was like to rear teenagers: that mix of setting limits with allowing them to make silly mistakes. This takes experience, and I'm quite happy with what Coach C. has learned about her craft so far.
"Don't get distracted, myself. Don't get distracted." Self-talk from a young relative

While I understand your analogy, the reality is, you would expect someone who has been watching basketball for multiple decades to be wise enough not to hastily write off a freshman basketball player at a university who has played minimal minutes. It reminds me of another post earlier this year when someone stated that there was no hope for Gabby to play significant minutes as a Cal center moving into the future. I understand that this forum encourages any opinion, but it amazes me how quick someone can come to an immediate final conclusion so early in a player's career, especially in the case of someone like Zahra.
