COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – Andrej Stojakovic scored a career-high 26 points but the California men’s basketball team squandered a 16-point halftime lead in a 98-93 loss at Missouri in an SEC/ACC Challenge contest on Tuesday night.

Four Golden Bears finished in double figures as Jeremiah Wilkinson added 19 points, Rytis Petraitis had 17 and Jovan Blacksher Jr. – making his return from a three-game absence due to injury – scored 13 along with a season-high five steals.

Cal (6-2) shot 50% (31 of 62) for the game, knocked down 10 3-pointers and made 21 of 25 at the line, but it was not enough to withstand a second-half barrage by the Tigers (7-1), who made 22-of-26 field goal attempts in the second half, including 14 in a row at one point.

Anthony Robinson II had a career-best 29 points while Mark Mitchell added 21 for Missouri.

Cal used a 17-0 run late in the first half to take a 51-35 lead into the intermission. Missouri erased that deficit quickly in the second half, taking the lead for good with 10:55 remaining. The Bears tied the game three times from then on, the last with 5 and a half minutes left.

Mitchell, harassed by three Bears in the paint, muscled through for a dunk and added another seconds later after a steal and assist from Tony Perkins for a 92-86 lead with 1:23 remaining. From there, Robinson made five free throws, two coming after a Cal player called a timeout the Bears didn't have.

Petraitis added five assists, three rebounds and three steals, while Stojakovic was 3 of 4 from 3-point range on the way to his fourth 20-point effort of the early season.

Cal was without BJ Omot and DJ Campbell for the fourth consecutive game while Missouri did not have leading scorer Caleb Grill.

Cal will host Stanford on Saturday in the two rival program’s inaugural ACC contest. Tipoff is at 1 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion.

Blacksher finished with 8 assists and 5 steals, pretty impressive coming back from injury.

I know coaches stick to their guns but Madsen could learn a lot from how Wilcox has lost games…
AKA what works in the first period doesn't work in the final period.
The other coaches adjust.
And you have to adjust to their adjustments

Correct. It didn't help that we turned the ball over a lot, missed an incredible amount of shots (partiicularly when compared to Mizzouri's 80% second half FGP), and played some awful defense. Getting outscored by 21 in the second half should never happen …

CN and Beardog, while I agree with your conclusions, I have to say that they are in fact just conclusions, and not specifics on what to needs to be done. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of specifics to offer either. One thing for sure it starts on the defensive end. It's interesting that up until this game, a lot of the comments on this site has been related to how bad our 3 point defense is. Well the fact is Mizzou only attempted 9 three point shots and made 3, which is a stat that almost any team will take nowadays based on the low quantity of attempts. But Missouri, who appears to be a strong and talented team, had their way with us in their half court offense. Our players didn't have the sharpness or physical strength to keep them from doing whatever they wanted. I don't think it was a strategy adjustment type of thing, I think it's more about being prepared on defense. All I can say is after 8 games we're not having trouble scoring, it's time for MM to move the team's focus on playing tougher defense, finding the balance of extending on the threes as well as working more like a unit on the inside. Usually at this point of the season, it's inserting more types of zone defenses into the playbook, giving strong offensive teams' like Missouri more different looks during the course of a game to go up against. Hopefully Madsen gets on this.

We played a match up zone in the second half that got shredded just as bad as playing man.

Agreed. Besides getting better at what we're doing, looks like we have to work on an option C, maybe even an option D.
