Bears Blank Nevada 8-0, Take Series from Wolfpack
BERKELEY - Late arrivers were mostly out of luck at Monday’s President’s day finale of the season-opening series with Nevada as six early runs powered the Bears to the series-clinching 8-0 win at Stu Gordon Stadium.
After pitcher Ethan Foley turned in a quick 1-2-3 top of the 1st, the Bears wasted no time making up for yesterday’s lackluster offensive effort. Foley gave the Bears a stellar effort in his first start as a Bear, giving up just 2 hits and a walk in four shutout innings. Foley also added 3 strikeouts in his effort, notching his first collegiate win for the Bears.
After a Jarren Advincula single and walks by PJ Moutzouridis and Dominic Smaldino, third baseman Max Handron blasted his first career grand slam to give the Bears a quick 4-0 lead to open the game.
After a scoreless top of the 2nd, outfielder Carl Schmidt took a walk and CF Seth Gwynn belted one out over the left field fence to give the Bears a quick 6-0 lead.
After Foley’s exit following the 4th, the Bears got scoreless innings from relievers Jake Guardiancic (1.2), and Cole Tremain, who closed out the game with 3.1 scoreless innings, picking up the save.
The Bears finally got back on the board for the first run of the game since the 2nd, with Gwynn producing a sac fly that plated pinch hitter Ethan Kodama followed by an RBI single up the middle by LF Jacob French that drove in Advincula to extend the lead to 8-0 in the bottom of the 8 to wrap up the scoring.
The Bears will have a few days off and will come back to the Stu to face 2-1 Houston, who will be coming off games against #16 Texas and #7 Oregon State on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to Berkeley.
The Bears moved to 3-1 following the series and the Wolfpack dropped to 1-3.
