Carlsbad LB/TE Rocky Cummings Commits to Cal
The Bears wrapped of hosting their third official visit weekend of the summer and fresh off of adding 10 commits from the last two weekends and five more this week in Honolulu QB Nainoa Lopes, Fresno WR Tyree Sams, Kailua OT Esaiah Wong, Honolulu IOL Kamo'i Huihui-White and DL Kingston Schirmer, the Bears added another in 6-4/220 ATH (TE/LB) Carlsbad HS (Carlsbad, CA) Rocky Cummings.
“I went on my official last weekend and really loved the coaching staff and the plan they have for me coming in,” Cummings said today. “I’ve built a great relationship with Coach Saffell and Coach So’oto. I really felt at home when I was up there and I knew it was where I want to be! Through the players, to the academics, it was a perfect fit for me. To add, Luke Ferelli and Jude McLellan (both Cal LBs) are guys I played with at Carlsbad that are also at Cal. And Coach Vic So’oto came out of Carlsbad High School, too.”
"Rocky's 6-4/225 and I think he's got a 79 inch wingspanas far as his reach," Carlsbad head coach Thadd MacNeil said. "He clocks well in the 40 and his vertical is, I think, 37 so he's a kind of a freakish athlete with his size and really big hands.
“In his junior year, he got mono and he missed like five games so when he came back, he was 6-3/210 or so. And I always knew the athleticism was there, but it (his recruitment) was kind of slow. And then everyone, when they came out and saw him, they're like, ‘Oh, my God, this guy's a freak,’ and that's what he is.
“We had Luke Ferelli, who’s at Cal now. He's sort of similar to Luke. He's also very athletic, he tests well. Rocky's longer, with longer arms, but similar type player.
“Rocky early was trained as a receiver because he was so skinny as a freshman and he was like 160 or something. So he was always like a receiver/safety and then he just kept getting bigger and that's why he's moved to those other spots now. A lot of programs recruited him as like an edge pass rusher, 20-sack type guy. And then other coaches gave me statistics about where they see him. Boston College in particular, a couple of their guys were in the 6'3/6'4, range who played 10 years of pro football at Mike backer. And then Utah was the first one to really go after him as a tight end and Utah, they have a pretty good reputation and history with tight ends.
“Cal got themselves a great one in Rocky.”
The 3 star, 2-way Carlsbad athlete totaled 29 tackles, 4.5 TFL, and 3 sacks in 7 games as a junior at linebacker after missing 5 games with mono. On offense at tight end, Cummings added a TD catch. He held offers from Utah, Minnesota, Boston College, BYU, Arizona and more and took an OV to BC last weekend before committing to Cal last night.
Cummings joins a rapidly-growing class of 22 that has the Bears currently rated #9 on Rivals and #15 on 247.
The versatile Cummings is being looked at to potentially play on both sides of the ball at both tight end and inside or outside linebacker.
The newest Bear will join prior commits QBs Brady Palmer, Nainoa Lopes, running back Victor Santino, WRs EJ Morgan and Tyree Sams, TEs Taimane Purcell and Luca Wolf, OLs Tommy Tofi, Kamo'i Huihui-White, Elisha Faamatuainu, Koloi Keli, Esaiah Wong and Artem Korchagin, DL Nemyah Telona and Frank Fanua, edge Camron Brooks, ILBs Jonathan McKinley and Jaxon Pyatt and DBs Jayden Crowder and Deon Jackson.
