That 10.4 Forty speed, sounds more like E40's 40 speed

The Bears unprecedented run of recruiting success continued today with the commitment of blazing fast Clovis North wide receiver Tyree Sams to Cal on his early week official visit today.
“The coaching staff was awesome!” Sams said after his commitment today. “The energy and atmosphere was great. Facilities are nice. It’s not far from home and their academic portfolio is amazing. Beyond football, the support is amazing, too. The offensive plans sound explosive with me coming here, too.”
As a junior, the 5-8/175 blazer with a 10.4 100 speed had 44 catches for 534 yards and 7 TDs and 1,000 all-purpose yards along with one interceptions on defense for Clovis North in a run-heavy offense led by McKay Madsen, a 4-star standout running back and linebacker who committed to BYU. He can be used in the slot in a lot of creative ways and is tough to catch and tackle. Sams can also be used in the return game with his speed and elusiveness.
Sams becomes the 21st commit of the 2026 class, moving Cal up to #12 in the Rivals team recruiting rankings. He joins fellow 2026 Cal commits QBs Brady Palmer and Nainoa Lopes, RB Victor Santino, WR EJ Morgan, TEs Taimane Purcell and Luca Wolf, OL Tommy Tofi, Elisha Faamatuainu, Esaiah Wong, Koloi Keli and Artem Korchagin, DL Nemyah Telona, Fank Fanua and Kingston Schirmer, edge Camron Brooks, ILBs Jonathan McKinley and Jaxon Pyatt and DBs Jayden Crowder and Deon Jackson.
That's his backward one leg hop forty speed.HairOfTheBear said:

I think the reality is that, until the athlete's butt is in his/her seat the first class of the semester, you can't be certain they're coming.McUrsine said:
I think its great that Cal is getting all these top notch high school recruits, but I'm just wondering, in this age of NIL, money, and portals, how secure are these commitments, really? If one of these players has a phenomenal senior season, what's to prevent other schools from throwing more money their way and stealing them?
Don't want to be a pessimist, but what's the reality?

No, you say Go Bears Forever. Even though realism may intrude (or not), it's weak to acknowledge anything but the max. Think of all the recruits to us and to others who have said in defense of their choices, "they're on the rise." You can't sell that if you voice even the slightest doubt.Iamhere2help said:That's why i began saying "Go Bears For Now" .Despite It Making Some Upset Here. The logic of sayingMcUrsine said:

"Go Bears" or "Go Bears Forever"
is not reality and a simple "Go Bears, For Now" is the reality of NIL.
Unfortunate but true.

All teams face the challenge of hanging on to players. I would rather have them visiting and committing then what we have had in the past regarding HS recruiting which has been very little of either. The focus now is maintaining the momentum and playing well and winning.
It seems to me that Harsin and the coaching staff have been attracting players. The worry that this staff will just run players away has not happened yet.
It is early but it feels like a very positive sign. Better to have momentum and buzz with a risk in losing it then to have nothing at all.

Well first Harsin ran off our skill position coaches (including Toler, our best recruiter) and we lost nearly ALL of our offensive players. It is good that they are recruiting relatively well, especially on the lines. Anae looks to be a keeper. Love that we have started recruiting Hawaii again.
I am curious, according to 247's 2026 recruiting rankings we have 21 HS commits, 3x4star and 17x3star, but when you look at the list, only Tofi is a 4star and 20 recruits are 3star. Does anyone know what is going on there?
Its based on the disparity between their 247 rankings and the composite ratings. Their class rankings are based on composite ratings but the visible player ratings (unless you click on their profile) are their own internal ratings. Santino (the RB) and Brooks (the OLB) are also rated as 4*s by compositecalumnus said:

The ACC pre-season report on Cal focused on three areas
1. They raved about the Ron Rivera hire. They predicted that he will have a major positive effect on Cal football over time (not in his first year,)
2. They believe that Devin Brown is a major improvement over Mendoza.
3. They spent a lot of time discussing the impact of the Portal on Cal's prospects this season and say that Cal is the poster child for what can happen to many teams that are not in the top tier and not in the bottom tier, but are somewhere in the middle tier.
They say that Wilcox is great at spotting players who are diamonds in the rough and showcasing their talents to the best advantage. But unfortunately Cal doesn't have the money to keep those players because of the NIL They hope that RR will provide enough juice to kick up donations so that Cal can keep some of the stars whom they (we) have developed.
I am worried that many of the good recruits know of Wilcox's skill in developing talent and setting the recruits up to make a killing when they jump into the Portal.
I hope that i am wrong and that RR can generate donor enthusiasm and donations to allow up to keep our top talent - now that we have gotten such good results from recruiting HS talent.
There are three people (2 men and 1 woman) who participated as the hosts for the ACC Pre-Season Review of the ACC teams. I have been watching the ACC Channel (n.b. much better than the old PAC 12 pre-season review).Big C said:GivemTheAxe said:I have similar thoughts.McUrsine said:

Wait, who is it that believes Devin Brown is a major improvement over Mendoza?!?
For the record. I am a Devin Brown fan now and not at all a Mendoza fan, but c'mon... Okay, maybe based on prep recruiting rankings, but at this level, Mendoza has done it, whereas Brown has yet to show that he can do it. We hope he can do it.

There appear to be several groups of hosts who break down ACC teams. I have no way of knowing their expertise or how they were selected to be in this group of hosts. . But i have seen this three-person group break down several other ACC teams.)
From listening to this group of hosts analyze other ACC teams, they appear to have some back-up (a lot? a little?) and are not acting on their own going out on a limb.
They had a lot of information on Brown and had a lot of respect for Brown's performance in high school and at OSU. They also had a lot of respect for his loyalty to OSU shown by him sticking around through the end of the Post Season. As might be expected they knew that Mendoza was a Dark Horse starting QB for Cal and had much better success than expected. But they also pointed out a number of the deficiencies that many posters on this board pointed out. They said that Mendoza will benefit from the new coaching group at Indiana. But they were certain that Brown had a much higher ceiling than Mendoza. And that Brown also was a more mobile QB in avoiding the rush and keeping his eyes down field and had better passing skills than Mendoza.

Fine to believe that and I hope they're right, but thinking Devin Brown will be better than Mendoza, especially in 2025, is a minority opinion. Brown has a lot of good qualities as a QB, but the one thing he has yet to show is that he can pass with consistent accuracy... and that's really important.
I hope everything comes together for Devin this fall. And the opposite for that other guy who plays for Indiana!
