The Bears appear to be in strong position to close out one of their top 2026 prospects in 6-4/185 4 star Compass Prep (Phoenix, AZ) SG Quincy Wadley‍. The 4 star senior currently holds offers from Villanova, Temple, Georgia, LSU and more and took an official visit to Cal on 9/12.

"It was really amazing, actually, one of the best places I've visited college-wise and the atmosphere was great," Wadley said. "The views, all the different people there, everything was amazing.

“I talked to Semetri (Carr) and he told me about his experience coming in as a freshman at Cal and he said he’s loved his experience and that says a lot to me.”

Originally from Arlington, Virginia, Wadley transferred to a loaded Compass Prep program to play higher level prep and EYBL ball. With his handles, penetration ability and ability to create his own shot and score from deep, Wadley has seen his recruiting profile grow and now sits as 247 composite’s #5 shooting guard in the country and #50 overall in the nation. Wadley’s father, Quincy Sr starred for Temple in 1998-2001.

Wadley cited his relationship with the Cal staff as something that really stands out to him in his recruiting process.

"We're really close-knit," Wadley said. "Coach Matt (Scherbenske) comes and visits me as much as he can and we talk almost every other day. And he's one of my closest people I talk to."

As for what he’s looking for and the timing of his decision?

“Really, I just opportunity to play as soon as I can and make my impact from day one,” Wadley said. “Me and my dad are gonna talk it over. I’m not sure of exactly when I’ll decide but it's gonna be really, really soon.”

"Really, I just want the opportunity to play as soon as I can and make my impact from day one," Wadley said.

Seems we have a guard traffic jam…. if Wadley wants to play as a freshman, whose place is he taking?

Who would've thought Carr would play as much and as early as he has?

In the time of NIL,this sort of thinking is foolish as we have little clue as to who will be on the roster next year

Yeah, pretty foolish. The only thing more foolish than that is pretending that Dai Dai, TT and Pippen are all going to clear out at the end of the season. No way to know, but if we're going to outperform the way everyone's hoping, I don't see why those three would head for the hills.
The point is that top recruits want to see a clear pathway for freshman year minutes, and it's worth talking about what Cal can offer them. If I were Quincy a "let's just wait to see how the roster looks in 10 months" response isn't going to cut it.

Guards Petraitis, Dorsey and Campbell are all seniors. They will not be back next year.

Sorry about being technical, but Petraitis is not a guard.

I think we're all overthinking this quote. Pretty much every kid says this. They never say, "they have some returning backcourt players that I look forward to learning from and backing up next season." Plus, if he really felt this way he'd go to a mid-major. A good problem that Madsen would handle with aplomb.

FIFY

One of the fun quirks of the interwebz is that it provides an overblown perception of reality. One or two voices can seem like 'we' or 'most' or 'everyone'.

In a real bar room discussion, we get to see the room and all that. Plus, the beer is better!!

Cheers!

Since Bell and Camden will be out of eligibility I think next season we could end up playing three guards.

hmmm, just wondering, in the age of legal/easy transferability, what's the going rate per year to hold on to worthy assets

True, he is a small forward just listed as a guard on the site I was using (sportsreference.com). Bell is the same height and listed there as a F but is also a senior. All of which opens up potential PT for a shooting guard if Madsen sometimes goes to 3 guard lineups, which he has been known to do.

When I was coaching kids, many of their parents were stuck in the mindset of old school positions (Center, PF, SF, SG, PG) and had programmed their kids that way. Much of my coaching effort was to break some of those old school roles and focus on skills and general bball IQ. Here's an example:

One of my players was the tallest kid in his class. His dad was tall and a high school center in the 70s. His mom was as well. In his mind, he was a center and his job was to stay in the paint and keep his hands up. He did that very well.

It took a few years to break him of that habit. One of the areas we worked on was closing out on the perimeter (positioning, footwork, angles, etc). This kid would reluctantly do so (wasting a precious two seconds getting a visual AOK from the crowd). When he would flash to the perimeter, he would IMMEDIATELY stand up tall, turn around and scramble back to the paint under the basket. It was pretty hilarious to watch.

Even more hilarious was his father screaming - "That guy doesn't even have the ball".

Some habits are hard to break. Hahaha

On the other hand, I had a girls team that paid postionless ball with 4 of 5 starters capable of knocking down threes and everyone aggressively rebounding and defending. They wore ribbons in their hair, but won alot of tournaments and sort of gave a dominant Mission AAU team (with Tierra Rogers? - its been a while) a run for their money back in the day (probably 20 years ago now).

The market just feels so uncertain. I think it is near impossible to try to gauge how many programs have a BYU whale intercede and screw the cap. Then you have pure conjecture on how many programs will ignore the clearing house. And then you have this strange situation in which if a kid REALLY blows up Frosh year are they sticking around to play college or going pro. And then the discount for playing on a "winning program"....and the discount if your program has a rep for player development.

Cal needs, I feel, to be competitive. To my visibility that is SDSU competitive so an NIL budget probably in the 3 to 5 million range.
