Great that you and your brother have both chosen Cal, Gunnar! The Cal Family welcomes the Perry Family!
GO BEARS!!!
The Bears picked up their second commitment of the 2027 class this morning with the addition of 1st Team All-State Notre Dame Prep (Scottsdale, AZ) MLB Gunnar Perry today.
The 6-0/225 MLB was a 2-way star for his squad as a junior, picking up 503 yards in 64 carries (7.9 ypc) and 12 TDs on offense and 119 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1 sack and 1 INT on defense for Notre Dame.
Perry is the younger brother of Oregon portal wide receiver Cooper Perry who signed with Cal last month after his first season in Eugene.
The Regional Defensive Player of the Year had the chance to take two unofficial visits to Cal recently and the opportunity to join the Bears, especially with his brother, was too much to pass up for the talented junior.
“Obviously, the opportunity to play with my brother was big,” Perry said. “I love Coach Tosh and Coach Gregory. But education is big as well. Just to be in the number one public institution kind of just sets you up for for the rest of your life, more than anything.
“I loved it at Cal. The campus is beautiful. It has so much history to it. Yeah, I mean the Bay Area, it's beautiful. Weather's great, too.”
What kind of player can fans expect to see from the newest Bear?
“Definitely my ability to play sideline to sideline and my ability to defend against the run. I have a presence in the box for sure, but definitely my mental side of the game. I feel like I have a better understanding of kind of like the chess match of it, and just knowing that that's such an important part of playing linebacker.”
And what can fans expect to see from from his older brother?
“Well, I’ll just tell you, he's the best football player I've ever seen in my life, craziest athlete. He's someone that is humble and he knows how to work, he knows when to work, but just a playmaker. He's my best friend.”
