California men's basketball gains a versatile player with the signing of Amier Ali as a transfer for head coach Mark Madsen's 2026-27 roster. A 6-foot-8 guard/forward, Ali comes to Cal as a junior following his prior work at Mississippi State and Arizona State.
Ali appeared in 32 games as a true freshman with the Sun Devils, averaging 5.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game and hitting 30 threes that season. He set his career high with an 18-point effort against No. 12 Texas Tech and also recorded a double-double at Oklahoma State. As a sophomore at Mississippi State, Ali played in 12 games, scoring a season-high 16 points and hitting the game-winning 3-pointer against New Orleans.
"Amier is one of the most exciting wings to enter the transfer portal," Madsen said of Ali. "His size and shooting ability give him a pro-style offensive game. On the defensive end he uses his versatility to make an impact at every position. We cannot wait to add Amier to the program!"
A native of Dallas, Texas, Ali attended Canyon International Academy in Arizona before signing on with the Sun Devils as a freshman. During his prep career, he ranked No. 54 in the nation as a prospect. On the club scene, he averaged 17.1 points per game during the 2023-24 EYBL season.
Ali joins a Cal program that made big strides in 2025-26 in recording the most wins in a season (22) since 2016 and its first postseason win since 2014. Last season's squad also recorded eight games with 90-plus points scored and had five players ranked in top-100 national statistical categories.
Currently, Ali is one of eight newcomers officially signed on for 2026-27, joining incoming freshmen Dionycius Bakare, Dominykas Daubaris and Nicolas Mitrovic along with transfers Michael Cooper, Nojus Indrusaitis, Jordan Ross and Jake Wilkins.
