Cal has landed a commitment from one of the top recruits in the Golden State.
Chaparral High School (Temecula) quarterback Dane Weber, widely considered the top 2027 signal-calling prospect in California alongside Ohio State commit Brady Edmunds, announced his decision to play in Berkeley on Thursday. The six-foot-tall and 220-pound righty chose the Golden Bears over UCLA and Cincinnati.
A four-star recruit according to On3, Weber has spoken very highly of Cal, making his commitment not too much of a surprise — a common theme during the Tosh Lupoi era.
“I loved the whole entire visit,” Weber said after a visit to Berkeley in March (via On3’s Adam Gorney). “I was struggling to find a flaw or something I didn’t like. Ultimately, I couldn’t find anything.”
Cal shared a video of the staff’s reaction to Weber’s official commitment; it was electric, to say the least.
As a junior in 2025, Weber completed 218 of 311 passes (70.1 percent) for 3,654 yards and 41 touchdowns to 9 interceptions.
He also flourished on the ground with 14 touchdowns and 668 yards over 115 rushes.
The Bears worked hard to bring Weber to the Bay, as the four-star could be the next in line at Cal after star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is expected to enter the 2028 NFL Draft.
The Bears’ effort meant a lot to Weber, an Elite 11 selection with around 30 offers across the nation, during his recruitment process — and it clearly paid off.
“The message that was portrayed to me was I’m their No. 1 guy regardless of position, so they’re going to do whatever they can,” Weber said. “That was definitely reciprocated, and I feel the love and the energy. It’s something I’d love to be a part of. That was kind of the message, me being the top guy, and I appreciate that.
“Tosh is awesome. All the stuff about him being a top recruiter is definitely not false advertising. He’s awesome with his attention to detail and what he cares about …”
Cal’s relatively recent quarterback recruiting continues to impress.
After finding and developing the Raiders’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Fernando Mendoza, and replacing him with Sagapolutele, it appears the future will remain bright under center in Berkeley.
“Big-framed quarterback who can stress a defense with his arm or his legs,” On3’s Greg Biggins said of Weber. “Pure thrower from the pocket with effortless delivery. Clean mechanics with a tight release, depth and balance on his drops, and the ball jumps out of his hand. Comfortable throwing (while) rolling out to his right or left, and can get it out from different arm angles. Shows ability to escape pressure, extend plays and is dangerous when the pocket breaks down.
“Can pick up chunks of yards on designed run plays or scramble for first downs when flushed. Decisive with his reads and has a natural feel for the position, in terms of throwing with anticipation and changing speeds. Has made a nice jump over the last year and is a trend-up quarterback who has the ability to be a multi-year starter at the (Power Four) level with an NFL ceiling.”
