California football will host Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, October 17, announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference office Monday morning. The game will be aired live on either ESPN or ESPN2, with the network designation to be finalized after the Week 6 games.

The Golden Bears (2-3, 1-1 ACC) will host the Demon Deacons (4-1, 2-1 ACC) at Databricks Field at California Memorial Stadium for the very first time. It will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams, with Cal having claimed victory in the first meeting in 2024, when the Bears held off the Demon Deacons, 46-36, to collect their first conference win since joining the ACC that season.

Cal will celebrate its highly anticipated Grateful Bears theme day when Wake Forest visits Berkeley. Tickets for the game are available for purchase here.

Wonderful! Another night game for which we'll struggle to get 25,000 butts in the stands.

Won't be attending this one. (If it was a night game it was always going to be tough because of other conflicts.)

Databricks Field???

Apparently databricks was founded at Cal, which is pretty cool, and unlike FTX or whatever, it's a legitimate company with a useful product that is like one of two companies in the space that have significant footprint.

Their color is red though. Snowflake is blue. Just saying.

Anyway, night games suck. Not just because of the time but because things like ASUC close well before kickoff, so I can't even pay money for a shirt, unless it's one of the very poor selection at the stadium. Extra poor now because I bought the shirts I liked for me, my kid and wife already... Haha

I'm sure BI won't mind my highlighting a sponsor:

Databricks is an enterprise data and artificial intelligence software company valued at $188 billion following its mid-2026 funding round. Founded in 2013 by the creators of Apache Spark, Databricks provides a unified, cloud-based platform natively integrated across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

What is the Databricks Platform?

At its core, Databricks pioneered the "Data Lakehouse" architecture. This architecture bridges the gap between data lakes (which store massive amounts of raw, unstructured data cheaply) and data warehouses (which are highly structured, fast, and secure for business analytics).
Unlike traditional databases that lock your data into proprietary storage, Databricks processes data where it livesin your own cloud storage bucket (like Amazon S3 or Azure Data Lake Storage) using fast, open-source file formats like Delta Lake.

Core Features & Capabilities

Data Intelligence & AI: Built-in generative AI tools like Mosaic AI and Genie allow technical and non-technical business teams to query enterprise data using natural language prompts.
Unified Governance: Powered by Unity Catalog, it offers centralized security, compliance monitoring, and data lineage tracing for data tables, code notebooks, and AI models.
Zero-Copy Integrations: Features advanced data federation tools, including its unified data ecosystem partnership with platforms like Workday Data Cloud.
Collaborative Workspaces: Supports shared interactive notebooks where data engineers, data scientists, and analysts can write Python, SQL, R, or Scala simultaneously.
Open Data Marketplace: An open-sharing framework (Databricks Marketplace) that allows companies to discover, securely share, and monetize data assets, notebooks, and AI models across different clouds without proprietary lock-in.
Are you exploring Databricks for a specific project? Tell me if you are looking to understand:
How it compares to competitors like Snowflake
Pricing structures and cluster optimization
Getting started with PySpark or SQL notebooks
I can tailor the exact technical documentation or workflows for your needs.

According to AI:

Over the last 4 years Cal has averaged 45,715 for night games and 34,312 for day games.

The only time we had low attendance for a night game was 26,244 in 2017 for a Friday night game against #8 Washington State but the North Bay fires and horribke air quality were a huge factor in keeping fans from coming. Cal upset #8 WSU 37-3 forcing 7 turnovers.

Part of the boost in attendance is that we play better opponents and TV wants to air (albeit at night). Also, the students really show up at night. Even though we play tougher opponents, Cal tends to play relatively well in these games winning almost 50% and Cal covers 60% ATS as a home dog in night games.

All I will mention is that Tennessee fans were furious their game against Bama was chosen away from the night slot to keep BYU-Notre Dame highlighted. I respect the truth that there's simply all kinds of preferences and opinions but sometimes it feels like this board is 180 degrees from the world outside. Like an "Inverse Cramer" thing.

Actually, since we've been in the ACC, the official paid attendance for day and night games has been quite similar. From 2024 through October 10, 2026 average night time paid attendance has been 39,605 for 8 night games and 36,571 for 9 day games. The night attendance, however, is skewed by by this season's opener at night against UCLA, which had a paid attendance of 54,283. If you remove that game, the day and night attendance averages are virtually the same. However, these are PAID attendance figures. There are a lot more no shows for night games than for day games, so actual butts in the seats for day games is slightly higher than at night games.

There's a new Cal team store in the stadium on the concourse level. So that's a lame excuse.

Night games are great for student attendance.
