6-4/190 3 star Higley (Gilbert, AZ) High School quarterback Spencer Brasch picked up an offer from Cal this week as offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin and special teams coach Charlie Ragle dropped in to see the talented multi-sport athlete work out and practice on Wednesday before extending the offer.
"I thought both of them were great to talk to and are very talented football coaches," said Brasch. "If I do end up going to Cal, it will be great playing for them, for sure.
"I like the way they run their offense. I feel like their quicker style fits me well, which is nice."
The super-athletic QB plays sports year-round, earning spots in the Arizona state track finals with a 49.0 400 and a 41'9" triple jump and also won state in volleyball, leading his team as an outside hitter, despite never having played the sport prior to this season. Brasch also did double duty in baseball and track last season at Higley, as well, and was clocked at 86 mph as a pitcher. And besides being a multi-sport athlete, Brasch also did double duty on the football field, first beating out the starting free safety as a soph before waiting his turn at QB while also averaging 42 yards per punt as Higley's punter both seasons.
A dual threat QB, Brasch competed 62% of his passes on the season for 33 touchdowns through the air with five intereceptions along with 898 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground, averaging an impressive 9.9 yards per carry.
"I think he's a really good quarterback that just happens to be a really good athlete," said Higley head coach Eddy Zubey, who starred for Concord's De La Salle High School before playing collegiately at Arizona State. "A lot of times you see kids who are really good athletes that just happen to be able to throw the ball but he's a quarterback first as well as a great athlete."
For offers, Brasch is seeing his options grow by the week.
"Right now, I have 15 offers," said Brasch. "Some of my top schools I'm thinking about now are Cal, SMU, NC State and Vanderbilt."
As for characteristics Brasch is looking for in the program of his choice, the athletic QB offered the following:
"I'd like to play for an offense I'm comfortable and play with guys I like and am comfortable with, too," said Brasch. "If I'm going to a school for four years, I don't want to be somewhere that I'm miserable. I really want to like where I'm at.
"I'm kind of thinking I'll make my decision by the end of June or early July. Wednesday's our last day of school, so I'll visit SMU on the 7th and the following weekend, I think I'll be going up to Cal."
