Interesting. I have always been impressed with Cam's ball tracking ability.

I've been watching (and cheering) for Cam Bynum for years and that assessment seems fairly accurate. Basically, a good all-around cornerback with so-so speed (relative to other NFL cornerback prospects). He will be drafted and is likely to stick with a team. A great Golden Bear with a bright future!

Thge Niners have a comp round three pick, one fourth round pick and three round five picks. I'm thinking round four or five. Preferably round five.

Yes and the Niners potentially lose a lot of their defensive backfield to free agency this year. They just signed Moseley but it's unclear what will happen with the others that they may lose. Sherman is almost certainly gone. I hope they keep Verett.

Hope springs eternal.

The last time the 49ers drafted a Cal player was Andre Carter 20 years ago when ex-Niner Tom Holmoe was the Cal coach and Mooch was the Niner coach. Never drafted a Cal player under Tedford, Dukes or Wilcox.

Since then while drafting zero from Cal they have drafted 5 players from Stanford and signed numerous Stanford players as undrafted free agents.

Since 1956, apart from a short period with the Holmoe/Mooch connection, the Niners have drafted 4 Cal players in 60 years.

During that time they drafted 15 Stanford players and 11 BYU players.

The 49ers have never had a Cal QB. The only Cal QB the 49ers ever drafted was Bob Celeri in the 10th round in 1950. He never signed with them and played baseball for the Yankees instead.

49er history is filled with Stanford QBs. A former Stanford QB is their current GM.

When they needed a LB they chose Todd Shell of BYU over Ron Rivera. When they needed a QB they chose Alex Smith of Utah over Aaron Rodgers.

Have any recent Stanfurd draftees panned out?

it's a pretty good analysis. especially the blurb about bigger WRs. He definitely struggled against them - the big guy from Stanford from a couple years ago who torched Bynum comes to mind

Yet another of the many reasons I've become less and less of a Niners fan over the years.

Well into the 1960s, college football/basketball were still the top dogs with respect to both attendence and TV exposure. The pro teams, as a way of generating local interest, frequently did draft/sign local college players as a way of generating fan interest. Checking some old NFL rosters for the 49ers and Raiders, it doesn't look like they did a lot of this. Through much of the 1960s, the 49ers had Brodie from Stanford and Matt Hazeltine from Cal. The 49ers did draft Steve Rivera in 1976, but he only stuck for a year. Steve Sweeney played a season for the Raiders and Jeff Barnes had a nice career with them, but that's about it. Both teams had as many players from San Jose St. as Cal/Stanford. Who knew that the first great Raider receiver, Art Powell, went to San Jose St? I did see one Cal player's name on the Raider roster for 1964, Proverb Jacobs. He was my PE teacher at Berkeley's Garfield (now Martin Luther King) Jr High in 1968.

Steve Rivera was not given much of a chance with the Niners. Walsh cut Matt Bouza, who had a couple of good years in the league. The Niners kept Mike Schuman who was not nearly as good as Bouza.

There's one mock draft out there that has Bynyum in the first round.

To the Saints at the 28th spot. Cam Jordan and Scott Fujita would be among the first to tweet their approval.

Cal Strong hope he wrong. But he saw Cam Bynum get beat several times last year. NFL scouts watch those mistakes over and over again. Cal Strong think Cam might have made mistake in declaring. Hope he goes in first round. But somewhat concerned he might fall down towards the middle/later rounds.
