This list is an absolute joke. No way would the average sports fan recognize the Wyoming logo. It's a cool logo, but it's not iconic in any way.

The Script Cal was used at the first college card stunts put on by the Cal rooting section in 1914 and has been a regular staple at least since then (I am still looking to see if it was used by Cal before that)

That means it has been a logo of Cal Football since 1914, FIVE (count 'em 5) years before UCLA was even founded as a college.

I agree with all this but come on folks we have to stop living in the past. UCLA is the #1 public school by the most followed publication. USC has been climbing the national rankings for years.

Cal has done nothing on the academic or athletic front to better its position against these two schools let alone the elite universities we claim to be.

So NFL, NBA, NCAA, ACC, AT&T, IBM, TWA, CIA, FBI, ICBM etc are not acronyms just initials. Thanks, I actually didn't know that.

In any case, acronym or initials, the U capitalizes and then the rest lower case all in cursive is just wrong and clearly a copy of Cal

I believe the word is "initialism", as in, "Though they have similar meanings, UCLA is an initialism, but FUBAR is an acronym."

Honestly, "acronym" is commonly used for both... and so what if that drives me crazy!

When I was an elementary school kid (around 3rd grade) growing up in SoCal I had no idea what UCLA was as my parents were both immigrants.

I would see kids wearing shirts that said "UCLA" and wonder what "uck-lah" was.

Funnily enough, so did some of them when I asked them about it!

Never even seen the Navy North Star -- inclusion on the list is just a sop to the military. Harvard football gets so little exposure that probably only an Ivy Leaguer would know it, if that. The Virginia, WVU and N'western logos, while distinctive, are hardly nationally iconic. Indiana didn't start using that logo on their helmet until 2005. Only someone of certain age would put the Razorback in their top 25. Tennessee above Texas? Nah.

And all the above are more recognizable than the helmet logos of Ohio State, Iowa, Nebraska, USC, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Florida State, Washington (arguably), even the script Cal?

Seems like the writer is biased towards the East and Southeast. I'm surprised he didn't include the Penn State and Boston College helmet logos.

This thread is completely missing the boat. Think logos like Gatorade, Morgan Stanley, etc

Was chatting with the number 1 rated high school indoor volleyball setter prior to COVID (most Cali kids have had their ratings fall due to lack of play), who turned down every Pac 12 school to go to an Ivy. They are promising deals with investment bank houses and corporate sponsors (which given the school is not hard to envision), and apparently their logos will be on her college jersey. So, I asked naivley, are you going to look like professional golfer or pro race car driver, and her response was: why become a professional and take a pay cut? Smart girl.

This has a lot of consequences, many of which probably are not foreseeable. But the end of non-revenue sports, to my surprise, may not be one of them.

The differences are surprising, aren't they? In 2009, my youngest son was rejected by Cal's Engineering program, but accepted by UCLA and Cal Poly SLO. We researched the reputations of both undergrad programs and were surprised at the gap between Cal and UCLA, but determined that UCLA and CP-SLO were very close and in some cases CP-SLO was better. When he considered the difference in instructional styles: theory (UCLA) vs application (CP-SLO), he chose Poly (as had his older brother) and never regretted it.

Its overall criteria favor private colleges.

The criterion of applications vs. admissions favors the SoCal schools because that is where the bulk of population is located and is hey get more applications.

The criterion of donations favors (1) universities with hospitals since hospitals generate inordinate amounts of donations; (2) wealthy small colleges that allow legacy admissions.

Cal does extremely well on factors that focus on education, faculty and academic reputation. While many people getting a college education value there criteria, USNWR does not give these criteria the weight they deserve.

I agree with everything you say. I was only using the USNews rankings to show that the poster was completely off base to say that Cal is inferior to ucla academically.

Moreover, Cal's average GPA and test scores are higher, meaning you need better academics to get into Cal versus UCLA. That means that nearly everyone who applies to Cal also applies to UCLA and other UCs as backups. The same is not true for UCLA. Many want UCLA as their first choice, their "stretch" school, but they dont consider Cal to be a backup. Their backups are UCSB, UCI and Cal State Northridge or Santa Monica City College as examples. The result is UCLA gets nearly all the Cal applicants plus many thousands more. USNews then uses that as an indication that UCLA is "better" when the opposite is the case.
