If he wanted to stay at SMU he would have pulled a Mike Tomlin:

Anybody asking Sean Payton about that, anyone asking Andy Reid about stuff like that? Anyone asking Sonny Dykes about that? Yes!

SMU a better job than TT? Depends on what you want...

SMU is pretty much locked out of the P5 now, and the AAC is taking a step backwards too with the loss of Houston, UCF, and Cincy.

Is Lubbock a worse p5 destination than Ames, IA or Pullman? Maybe, but one can win there and the B12 champion can still be relavent in the bigger CFB picture. So if that's what one wants, and no other p5 schools is a knocking....

Would any other bigger p5 school offer Dykes after a few good years at SMU? Sure living in a city is nice, but can't see many choosing to stay at a G5 school in a gimped conference if there are decent offers out there. Then again, if his family is settled and doing well, it might make sense to stay until the kids finish up local HS. SMU is still a $2 million/yr job, and outside offers mean more guaranteed money is likely.

I have to think that at some point Sonny will want to coach p5 again, even if just to show he's better than he was at Cal, just when and where?

Looking at the OP photo I thought maybe Sonny had lost that fire in the chicken spaghetti belly now in his 50s. But...

When Texas and Oklahoma leave the B12, SMU will be a logical candidate to join. Texas Tech is not a better job, but he is an alum.

I agree with the article, his next job is probably SEC, maybe B1G. ACC or PAC-12 (Arizona?) possibly.

F' Sunny, he bolted as fast as he could, I no longer care what he does with career, also I don't care about kids who don't want to play at Cal, I wish no harm to them but I don't care to continually Rae about them on this website!

JW is on the hot seat, he can save his arse for another year if he can beat two of the three California schools but if last week was his last win, then it's time for the AD to get the big donors to pay off JW and his staff.

Dykes to Texas would be a fun story.
The difference between a right wing conspiracy and the truth is about 20 months.

Given that Spike was TT's coach for a while, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Sonny ends up there. I think that history probably has a lot more to do with the situation than a lot of this other atmospheric stuff. If Sonny always wanted to coach at TT to follow in his dad's footsteps or whatever, now is his chance.

FYI

Dykes was fired from Cal. We paid off his contract. He did not have another job lined up. SMU hired him a year later.

Sonny was born in Lubbock. He played baseball at TT. He is an alum.

Yes, forgot he went there too. He wasn't born in Lubbock though - according to the internet he's from about 90 minutes away in Big Spring, wherever that is (ok looks like at the time Spike was a HS football coach there which makes sense).

SMU is going nowhere. The B12 has already made a decision to replace TX and OK. Cincinnati, UCF, BYU and Houston are joining the conference.

Yeah, looking at Spikes' wiki, Spike was at Big Spring HS in 1969, when Sonny was born, took jobs at Texas, New Mexico and Mississippi State before moving to Lubbock in 1984, when Sonny would have been 15. So he went to HS and college in Lubbock.

This is the person who brought Dykes to Cal. Also brought us Martin.

I remember Dykes was flown in via private plane. Did Tedford or Wilcox get a private plane? Or did they have to fly Southwest.

Thanks KBear, I grew up in Turlock and have lived all my 70 years there except for the two years at Cal and eight more after that in Berkeley, Alameda and Oakland. It's a great place to live and raise a family and while I have never been to Lubbock I doubt it is very similar to Turlock. However, I get your point. Some people just prefer big cities and what they offer. I enjoyed my time in the Bay Area after graduation for a while but got tired of it and was glad to move home.

Haha I was messing around. One of my best friends my first year in the dorms was from Turlock - we used to go to Harmon Gym together for all games. I have no idea about the place except I am assuming it is along the grape vine. But yah I am sure it's nice. When I was a freshman (88-89) I recall a men's basketball player from Turlock. My friend had to note that.
