Maybe he is just super passionate about winning?
Are you suggesting coaches that do not act like jerks on the sideline aren't super passionate?

Guys like Tom Landry, Bill Walsh, Don Shula?

You have much to learn about the difference between coaches who act like an ass and those who displayed great leadership qualities.

It is amusing to read the various posts on this thread with most posters sharing their views about what is going on in Sonny's mind based upon their own perspective.

Sonny like most other College FB head coaches is not like most of us. Rarely do they move to a place they want to live. They move to a place where they can coach a better team or for more money and provides a better stepping stone to the top of their profession.
What Sonny said was no promise of staying at SMU:
"I'm not ever going to talk about other jobs"

Remember he was fired at Cal for spending too much time looking for other HC positions. Sure many Cal fans wanted him gone. But the AD was leaning toward giving him one more year until Sonny shot himself in the foot by taking one trip too many to listen to other offers.

So now Sonny says; I'm not going to talk about leaving. He doesn't say: "I'm never leaving."

And even if he said "I'm never leaving". I wouldn't believe it any more than when a movie star, upon getting married, says "our marriage is forever".

Looking at the OP photo I thought maybe Sonny had lost that fire in the chicken spaghetti belly now in his 50s. But...

It looks like he still acts like an ass on the sidelines…..
Yep - ignoring team and b*tching at refs.

I remember Dykes was flown in via private plane. Did Tedford or Wilcox get a private plane? Or did they have to fly Southwest.

Maybe after he was fired by Cal he became passionate about winning, and not just about interviewing for other jobs?

Lubbock v. Dallas. That's like Turlock v. SF.
Thanks KBear, I grew up in Turlock and have lived all my 70 years there except for the two years at Cal and eight more after that in Berkeley, Alameda and Oakland. It's a great place to live and raise a family and while I have never been to Lubbock I doubt it is very similar to Turlock. However, I get your point. Some people just prefer big cities and what they offer. I enjoyed my time in the Bay Area after graduation for a while but got tired of it and was glad to move home.
Haha I was messing around. One of my best friends my first year in the dorms was from Turlock - we used to go to Harmon Gym together for all games. I have no idea about the place except I am assuming it is along the grape vine. But yah I am sure it's nice. When I was a freshman (88-89) I recall a men's basketball player from Turlock. My friend had to note that.
Not a problem. Not located on the Grapevine if you're referring to the pass between Bakersfield and LA, but in the Central Valley between Sacramento and Fresno. Don't recall a player from Turlock then but possible.
