Fire Wilcox no matter what happens against USC

He should be fired.

Cal isn't going to beat USC and unless USC has five turnovers.

USC D will stuff the box against Cal like everyone else and Garbers will be running for his life again.

5 years of losing conference records says it all. Can only pray UW hires him, they would be dumber than nails.

Wilcox deserve to be fired.

But main purpose of a Cal football coach is to beat stanfurd. Wilcox did that this year, so he bought himself one more year. We need to wait until the next time he lose to furd to fire him.

What a dumb idea. Cal could very well beat USC at home next week. They're a bad team. So what? Stop making beating bad teams that you have a rivalry with a mark of achievement. You have five years of Wilcox results that tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can't recruit well enough (especially at the QB position) and can't coach well enough for this program to ever be any good.

Just accept that he isn't the guy.

Typo: You meant to write he is the guy! If Wilcox can't win at Cal, nobody can. It's not Wilcox; it's Cal!

Who are the realistic options? And are any of them exciting enough to generate buzz rather than start from scratch? As has been said before there seem to be a higher-than-usual number of openings this year and I don't see Cal as a frontrunner for anyone with obvious upside.

True, but we know what we're getting with Wilcox and I think it's time to roll the dice and move on.

I mentioned this in the game thread, but might we have a better chance of improving by getting a new offensive coordinator than by firing Wilcox? I feel like we're stuck between a rock and a hard place with this.

Hell, we could hire just about any high school coach for $200,000 per year and achieve results like Wilcox has achieved. We could then throw the other $3,000,000 left over from Wilcox's salary to hire a top-flight basketball coach.

Is a new offensive coordinator going to fix the obvious talent issues you see anytime Cal goes up against a decent or better team?

The solution is so *******ed obvious, but Cal fans will twist themselves into knots avoiding to have to confront it.
A better coordinator could probably go a long way towards fixing it, but if there's a realistic and exciting option to replace Wilcox (with all that comes with rebuilding again), I'm for it.

Our football program can't fall much lower. We'll likely lose to USC and end up 4-8 for the season. That's 5 losing conference records in a row under Wilcox. We're in Holmoe and Gilby territory.

We have talent?

Wilcox won with Sonny Dykes recruits. For all the supposed recruiting wins we've had under Wilcox and their supposed "OKG" bonus attributes, this team does appear to not play like they have talent. Wilcox sucks. Its time for him to go.

What is with all the fretting about rebuilding?

We're rebuilding now!

Except Wilcox is doing a bad job of it! Let's give someone else a chance.

I don't see what the foundation is that Wilcox is supposedly building upon. If anything, the team has bled talent both on the field and on the coaching staff during his tenure.

The sad part in all of this is we realistically cannot fire him thanks to that stupid ass extension he got. Unless anyone can raise the money, we are so screwed. This f*king sucks by all measures.

If you fire the HC you get a new OC too, and honestly t think that is warranted.

The biggest issue is Knowlton would be the guy in charge of the hiring process.

There's no need to insult the players on Cal's team. Yes, we have talent. Are they being coached up? No. Are they the most elite college football talent? Also, no. But they are talented players and athletes. Do not deprecate them by saying Cal has no talent. Slam the coaches all you want, but the players are off-limits.

No either or. Beat SC and fire Wilcox.

Face it, he is what you see, and the team isn't going to change with him as HC.

I'm praying the football gods send Wilcox to UW, but I can't for the life of me imagine the Huskies would do something that incredibly dumb. We'll have to take out our own trash, and hopefully we do sooner than later.

I don't know how much of this is coaching but here's what I saw:
Tackling was surprisingly disappointing, especially in the 2nd half.
OL play also poor.
We have very good backs, good receivers and a good secondary (especially Hicks).
LBs have gotten better over the course of the season but they took a step back this game. I'm curious why they're so weak on pass coverage. Seems they are often out of position.
As for Garbers, he can do well if he has time.

I'm not defending having losing conference records, but .... the last time Cal had a winning conference record was in 2009, the first year of Obama's presidency.

In fact, Cal has had only 5 seasons with winning conference records in the last 30 seasons. (Yes, all 5 happened under Tedford.)

But it is the standard to which we hold coaches. Our ultimate goal is a conference championship. Tedford (and Snyder) showed it is possible. Tedford then showed he could not achieve it anymore so we showed him the door. We hired Dykes. He showed he was not the guy so we showed him the door and hired Wilcox. Wilcox has not shown he can achieve it either.

The same argument could be made in the 5th year of Holmoe after Gilbertson and Mooch. Just give Holmoe more time? Or move on and a chance to a young offensive coordinator that has obvious leadership qualities.
