Bye Bye

I have no fond memories of Evans Hall. And while I knew architecture majors and practitioners who would defend Wurster - I never heard any defense of Evans.

I hope they can get rid of those ugly brutalist buildings too...

A low cost disaster imposed on the University by reactionary state political hacks in the late sixties. What a dump from the day it opened.

Otherwise, it had a nice view from the patio on top.

Finally, the Unabomber building is gone.

I will. Not because of its architecture but because I have such great memories there. I felt smarter in that building just knowing who else was there.

Also the view from the top floor was great.

Technically, it was built in 1971, but a lot of the buildings from the 1960s are trash. Tolman is a goner. Unit 1 and Unit 2 had to be overhauled. I wonder why they don't build beautiful buildings anymore? Are they too expensive or not energy efficient?

Also, there were a lot of suicides at Evans Hall when I was a student.

Do people still commit suicide by jumping off the building like they did when I was an undergrad?

I still wake at night with nightmares of being trapped in the basement of Evans waiting for my computer cards to feed and my Fortran program to compile. ***sob***

Fixed if for you.

The article also states that a building is going up on the Dwinelle lot...goodbye to a pretty good tailgating spot for those with the proper pass.

This is new news to me.

As a math major, I spent too much time in Evans Hall. While I have happy memories, I was never enamored with the architecture of the concrete monstrosity.

My question is: where will the Math Department relocate??

Unbelievably Harvard has (or had, it's been years since I've been there) the exact same type of buildings sprinkled between beautiful, historical buildings. It's like the architects of the 60s smoked too much weed or something.

Ah, yes.

As an alum, one of the worst things about Evans is its location near some of the most beautiful spots/buildings on campus, so when I give a campus tour to out-of-town friends and relatives, there it is, nearly ruining everything.

I do have fond memories of being able to relieve myself in the first floor bathroom, before just about every home football game for thirty year or so. Evans was always there for me!

Good riddance. Now if they could only resurrect the old Bears' Lair.

As an alternative, you might try the former Barrows Hall (now Social Sciences Building).

I may have seen you there while trying to finish my final project for my Fortran for non-CSEE majors class. Still not sure how I finally got it to work.

Kroeber was our favored home football game bathroom location.

Didn't Evans Hall house a behemoth computer in the early 1970's? I think it was powered by 10,000 squirrels.

that computer was a CDC 6400, was 2 of them for awhile but the one that belonged to the Feds was removed.

Evans Hall is certainly not an architectural gem, but it's not the ugliest building on campus. I just don't see how a campus so strapped for money and space can just tear down a 12-story building and leave the space open. And then they're going to shoe horn a new building in the small Dwinelle parking lot? Unbelieveable. It could only happen at Cal, where administrators seem to be totally brain dead.

Yep, good ol' Fortran. For me, the class was Engineering 1 (also called CS1, I think) and yeah hanging out down in the basement with a stack of cards was not my idea of fun. Turnaround time was pretty good around 2AM until the last week of the quarter. I also remember Calc lectures in those lecture halls on the lower level.

But my last memory of Evans was meeting my parents and girlfriend by the main entrance before walking up to the Greek Theater for the Engineering graduation. I completed my last final was only an hour before and I was in a bit of a daze. Wow, 46 years ago.

The Feds had to remove the other one after Captain Kirk psyched it out and smoke came out of it.

This plan seems great to me. Glad the larger glade will be connected with mining circle the way it was originally intended. The Dwinelle lot is not particularly small, and they're not relocating all current Evans units to the new building.

Glad it will soon be gone. However, Dwinelle lot is where my disabled sister parks for football games.

There are students that got lost in Dwinelle Hall where the offices of history professors are located that were never seen again. I think they found one guy's tennis shoe.

You're kidding, right? Wurster Hall is by far the ugliest building on campus. Cory Hall and Lewis Hall are not great.

I park there for basketball games. Best lot on campus for basketball.

The Dwinelle lot is very small. I park there for every Cal men's basketball game, so I'm very familiar with it.

I didn't realize it opened in 1971. That was my first year. I only had one class in it, Stat 2 my first quarter. It had the slowest elevators, even when it was brand new. Thank goodness I never had any more classes there.

Evans Hall was planned to be replaced by two smaller buildings in the Long Range Development Plan.

Quote:

Evans Hall is replaced with a pair of new pavilions, restoring the view from the Mining Circle out to Memorial Glade and the Bay. A new oval green is completed on axis with the Campanile.
