How will the mathematics department pay for the seismic retrofit?
Will they sell exclusive "center 10 lecture hall seats" to students who want the "best view of the action?"
Will they pump songs & advertisements through the building's PA system to "enhance" revenue?
Jumbotron space for advertisers?
Sell the naming rights to the computer lab?

I'd sure like to know how on earth they're gonna be able to justify such huge expenditure and run math "in the black" so the University can provide its much sought-after "stakeholder value."

And this is for a COMPLETELY NON-REVENUE academic department! Oh man, they're gonna have to rely on some "non-traditional revenue sources" to make this whole thing work!

Otherwise, it looks like it'll NEVER get repaid! At LEAST Memorial Stadium has some sort of repayment plan - with interest, no less!

Math already has a practice facility on the hill - ok, it's called Mathematical Science Research Institute. It used to pay rent to Cal - but no more!

Interesting that, according to the article, they have no plans to replace Evans, and intend to leave it as open space, thus reestablishing the previous viewscape.

woohoo! as if engineering at cal wasn't stressful enough, spending every morning in sections in the bowels of that thing certainly didn't help

i bet the average cal engineering grad henceforth matriculates happier, more creative and generally happy than us old guys who spent our years in the dungeon. well, i didn't go to section all that often, but still

Although I can't say any proposed replacement designated "Academic Replacement Building" inspires a ton of confidence. Sounds like something that would be attached to Central Gulag 8 - Heavy Rock Rearranging District

I may have seen you there while trying to finish my final project for my Fortran for non-CSEE majors class. Still not sure how I finally got it to work.

Funny, I had the exact same experience. My one and only computer class at Cal. Crossed any computer related field off my mental checklist of future careers. Then, as part of my 'master plan' had a successful 30 year IT career for the phone company/IBM.

Evans Hall is certainly not an architectural gem, but it's not the ugliest building on campus. I just don't see how a campus so strapped for money and space can just tear down a 12-story building and leave the space open. And then they're going to shoe horn a new building in the small Dwinelle parking lot? Unbelieveable. It could only happen at Cal, where administrators seem to be totally brain dead.
What building is uglier?
"Bill Wurster had hoped that no University regent would like the building when it was finished, and he got his wish."

btw: Wurster Hall was designed by the Architecture school faculty.

You're kidding, right? Wurster Hall is by far the ugliest building on campus. Cory Hall and Lewis Hall are not great.
Nah. Wurster Hall has some dimensionality and visual interest. The studio spaces are also pretty nice and have great light. It also doesn't block the best views on campus.

The location of Evans makes it easily the most egregious offender. Tear it down.

The area around Evans Hall will also be changing, Berkeley's 2020 Facilities Master Plan includes several buildings planned for replacement that are part of the College of Engineering.

OMG. That sums up my recollection of my students years completely.

Evans Hall was brand new when I arrived on campus ... hard to believe it's reached the end.

The basement housed a Control Data Corp CDC6400. I think my microwave now has more computing power.

This Daily Cal reporter should talk to a few more sources on campus, because it's going to be a while until Evans is torn down. The new building on the Dwinelle lot site will only replace the classroom space in Evans. There needs to be a solution for where to move the math and Econ depts that currently reside in Evans. So we're looking at a half decade at the earliest. There are some cool renderings of what the Evans site could look like when they release the new Campus Master plan. It's envisioned as a low key student space below grade with a terrace on top with views down the glade.

I remember complaining about Wurster's appearance to some of my architecture student friends, and they responded that it is a great design because "it looks wet when it rains". I guess there's that.

I have no fond memories of Evans Hall. And while I knew architecture majors and practitioners who would defend Wurster - I never heard any defense of Evans.
I enjoyed my classes there but yeesh have to agree with everything you said. Nobody will miss that building.

Hallelujah
I enjoyed my classes in the T-buildings (T stood for "temporary" when they were installed during WW1 or WW2 but they were still there in the 1960's) in approximately the same location but I was glad to see them gone.

One of the worst aspects of Evans is that it stood amid the most beautiful beautiful buildings in the center of campus like the Campanile, Hearst Mining, the Engineering Building, Doe Library and South Hall.

We used to refer to it as Cinderella's ugly step sister.

I hope that it's replacement is not some awful misguided architectural mistake but is more like the East Asian library which IMO is one of the best designed " new" buildings in campus over the last 40 years.

The article confirms what a number of us students guessed. It was designed by committee who could not agree on a final winner among two so the committee just combined the final plans into one building.

They wound up not just with a "bad" building but with the "Wurster-est" building on campus.

As someone who pulled many an all-nighter in Wurster, Wurster has a huge degree of functionality in its design that, to some extent, results in and justifies its ugliness.

What excuse does Evans have? None.

as as aside, I did a lot of college tours back east with my kids and it was always easy to pick out the Architecture School building -- they were usually butt-ugly and didn't fit in with the rest of the campus.

May be true. But the fact remains, that in spite of whatever functionality it has, Wurster is the ugliest building on campus. That was my point.

I actually have fond memories of that building.

I was an Applied Math major who took a lot of math, statistics, computer science, economics, and other classes in Evans Hall. I bet half of my classes were in Evans, maybe more. Evans/(former) Leconte/Cory/Wheeler/Lewis/Latimer/Pimentel/Campbell were where I spent years of my life. I rarely had classes on other parts of campus, especially the west and northwest parts.

While not the most beautiful building, it also wasn't the ugliest and as others have said it had greats views from the student lounges on the top floors. The courtyard on the 9th floor was a hidden gem. The Math Library was also in Evans Hall. Not a lot of people went there so it was a nice quiet place to study.

The basement hosted the WEB (Workstations in Evans Basement) which was a computer lab. I spent many all-nighters there and some people even slept there - at least until 5am when the cleaning crew would roust us out. We did homework but also socialized. The Open Computing Facility (OCF), which provided free Internet access to all students was based in Evans.

Evans also housed the CSUA (Computer Science Undergraduate Association). At night the elevators were turned off and couldn't be called to the lower floors. However, there was a terminal inside the room with the printers and from that terminal we could login and send messages to each other.

A call of "elevatorP" (derived from Pascal) would prompt the students on the upper floors to send the elevator down to get you after hours.

There was also a "Magic Door" which had a malfunctioning lock which could get you into the building after hours.

Other memories of Evans Hall include the "Gravity Tester" and an FBI raid spawned by rumors of software piracy.

Sad to see it go. I actually am growing a jade plant taken from a cutting one of the Evans Hall balconies.

I also liked being able to see Evans (along with the Campanile) to identify campus from SF.

As for Dwinelle, I'd be glad to be rid of that building. It is ugly as sin and I did get lost in it more than once. Only when I was a senior did I realize Dwinelle housed a theater and I saw some productions there, but it still gets my vote for most horrible building. Wurster is a close second - or maybe Moffitt Library. I don't know why anyone goes to Moffitt for any reason ever. I wouldn't mind seeing (former) Barrows torn down either. All of these are far more hideous than Evans, but I guess Evans has seismic issues.

My favorite building was the Doe Library. I spent time studying in Doe but also just reading the print magazines and newspapers between classes in the reading rooms or Morrison. Bancroft Library is also a place a lot of students don't venture to, but I discovered it during my job as a campus courier.

IMO Moffitt was ugly on the inside. The view of Moffitt from the outside looking East from LSB was attractive
The view of Moffitt looking West from Evans was OK (at best). Moffitt has a low profile and looking West from Evans you could see over Moffitt to see SF Bay.

I used to HATE the inside of Moffitt. It was dark and cramped. It reminded me of a medieval dungeon and just as welcoming.

But on a lighter note Moffitt is getting a major interior renovation floor by floor. Two of its five floors have been completed and the difference is like night and day. The new floors are open and bright with views of the campus looking West and East. I love the view to the East since you can see the Big C on the hill.

The design of the prospective remodel of the three remains floors is spectacular
But it needs funding that has yet to materialize.

Chancellor Christ has included financing for the remodeling of the 3 remaining floors as part of the current funding campaign. It is part of her focus on improving the quality of the undergraduate experience at Cal.

If anyone is interested you can make a directed contribution to the Cal Library to be used solely for the remodeling of Moffitt.

Since I hated the old Moffitt so much, I made a directed donation (not a lot but the best I could do) so that today's and tomorrow's Cal students would not have to put up with the old dark dingy and unwelcoming Moffitt like we did.

Most of my studying was done at Moffitt Library. Yes, it was ugly, but I could always find a cavernous corner on one of the floors with not a lot of people and plop down at a desk for 3 or 4 hours and have a serious solo study session.

As a reward, when I was finished I would sometimes visit the Moffitt Media room and watch a DVD from their extensive movie collection. This was cutting edge technology in the early to mid 90s!!

I worked in Doe - fetching books from the stacks, manning the circulation desk, shelving books. Perhaps the favorite job I've ever had. And the Morrison Reading Room was one of my favorite spots on the entire campus.

At the time, every book that was checked out resulted in the creation of an IBM punch card. Between my major (Comp Sci) and my job, I spent a lot of time at the keyboard of an IBM card punch machine.

It was "wet" when I attended CAL because of all of the sorority girls that studied on 2nd floor Wurster.

It truly was the "place" to be.

Big +1 from me. I used to go walk around or sit in Doe sometimes just to improve my mood. Always makes me feel better. Went into Moffit late in our last semester with some friends because they had to meet someone or something and when I casually commented that I'd never been in there before everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

Also, wish I knew about the lounges up in Evans. I always figured it must have great views but never explored. When/why did Barrows stop being Barrows? Barrows and Haas are where I spent most of my time.

As far as ugliest buildings, it was clear to me:

3. Kroeber: plenty ugly, but not that big... and stuck off in the corner of campus near Boalt

2. Barrows: Not ugly but not at all good looking, way too big and close to the (outside) center of campus, visible from a distance, even by car. People arriving to campus from points south would see (yuk) Barrows.

1. Evans: Big and ugly. A monstrosity. (dimitrig, glad you have fond memories from the inside).

If I had it to do over again, I would definitely explore some of the out-of-the way libraries and spots on campus.

The main part of my day when I wasn't in class or on
My job at the Student Union or taking part in extra curricular activities I was somewhere in One of the Campus libraries. I tried to study in every library on campus at one time or another. Most of the time I was at Doe
Cal has some great libraries and never had a bad experience in any of them. But Doe was not only a spectacular building but it was a great place to mingle and meet women. Because of the setting it was always easy to start up a conversation with a cute coed. In fact I met the coed who eventually became my wife in the main reading room at Doe.

I studied some at Moffat but it was too easy to fall asleep at a cubicle there. The Main Reading Room at Doe was beautiful, but the large number of people and enforced silence, inevitably broken up by coughing, or the screeching of a chair on the floor with annoyed shushes was too intense and was off putting to me.

The Morrison Reading Room was great. The second floor had turntable, earphones and a jazz and classical collection. I would study while listening and exploring.

One of my personal favorites was the philosophy library at Moses Hall. On cold winter days they would sometimes have a fire in the fireplace.

Mostly I studied in Berkeley cafes, back then you could get a great cappuccino for 60 cents. I was happy to spend most of an afternoon or evening there, usually classical music in the background, a murmur of conversation, cute girls, kept me awake and happy to be studying,
