Reminds me a bit of a story my wife use to tell. In the Torrance school system she worked with a woman who had been a counselor at Wilmington High in the early 70's. She admitted to having told the young Vince Ferragamo, "... you're a smart kid, you have to give up this football stuff". As I understand it the statement was made in a non contentious manner in an effort to be helpful. Vince ended up a first team academic All-American.

Yeah, I think the video you posted is this honest account and the expulsion threat is a recently added embellishment. And not even a plausible one. You cannot get expelled that easily and it sounds like this prof was really a TA.

Always nice to be able to tell a story with no fact checking available--the professor is nameless and can't call BS. I suppose one of his teammates who he says was allowed to do a re-write might corroborate. Also, failing to correctly cite sources might also mean didn't cite sources, which sounds a bit like plagiarism. But AR is no dummy. I don't know if this is accurate, but:

I love Aaron. But he has been telling this story for at least a decade, and it simply isn't true.

There is no class called "Food Appreciation" at Cal. I can only assume he meant NutriSci 10.

He starts with a false and embellished premise, and the rest is hearsay at best.

Aaron is a great player. But he isn't a particularly honest person. He has been telling this BS for over a decade, and he pulled that whole "immunized" stunt last year.

I don't understand the negativity towards Rodgers. I really respect him for being his own person, rising to be the best of the best, and not forgetting his alma mater.

And he's right.

I was an athlete at Cal some years before Rodgers and a serious student who wanted graduate school and good grades. I knew never to wear a letter jacket to class. Professors for the most part, disrespected the athletes and could care less about training, schedules, or travel.

The "threat of expulsion" might have been for plagiarism. Rodgers said the TA had an issue with the citations? (Or lack thereof?). It sounds like the paper he turned in had material cut and pasted from the Internet. Not that uncommon for kids in 2003 or 2004 to do it and to be caught doing it.

Does he have to be a good boy and vax up and toe the party line before he gets the respect here he deserves for his incredible athletic accomplishments?

Grow up people. You can appreciate and support the athletic accomplishments of people who think differently than you do if you're a big enough person. I don't agree with the politics or personalities of lots of athletes and actors I root for or go see in movies because I appreciate their skills and accomplishments. But I guess I'm crazy that way.

There is no such class as "Food Appreciation" it was probably Nutrition Science. And saying it sounds like he did not cite his material properly is not "politics" I happen to know someone who was suspended for a year (as per UC policy) for insufficient citations. It is a real thing.

Maybe he's saying 'food appreciation' as a whimsical take on nutrition. Interesting that 12 athletes were in the class.
