Tailgate Town at Maxwell Field

I've seen a few inquiries here about pre-game Tailgate Town.

We went last game and it was even more disappointing than in the past.

Even fewer sponsor booths than before (maybe 3 down to only 2). Zero student groups

No other Cal team in attendance (sometimes in the past a team would show up)

Of course no dance or cheer team (they sometimes came in the past)

No band

The area for donors had no lunch like in past (just some pastries)

I've suggested some modest low hanging fruit in the past and the only one they did wasn't continued (a different student group attend each game)

I think this is because so little resources are assigned

In contrast, look at how many groups are attending the Solano Stroll tomorrow (if you haven't attended before you should):

Another sign of the program decline and poor leadership

I feel like there is the potential to turn the tailgate into something special. Add food trucks, alcohol booths, cal student involvement, bands, cheer team, dance team, local vendors, giveaways, & more! Maybe you could make it like like Thrive City and have people stay there during the game if you added a massive screen?

I forget is there live music? If not there should be some and maybe invest in a semi-famous band.

There has been live music at Maxwell Field in past seasons, including some pretty good cover bands. Today, it seemed to just be a DJ. I wasn't there last week. Some decent free food at the Cal Athletics Fund tailgate there today, but not as many booths as in the past in the public Maxwell Field area.

Why would you want people to stay at Maxwell Field during the game instead of being in Memorial Stadium?

I wonder if the California Legends NIL Collective could perhaps sell merch there and advertise themselves to game attendees who might not be excessively online like some of us are.

The AD seems to be on a mission to make the game day experience as sparse and lackluster as he possibly can. Your average industry conference is an order of magnitude more exciting now. It's baffling.

Did Dave Kaval take over Cal FB operations? This sounds like the Oakland A's M.O. Hope Cal isn't threatening to relocate. UC Vegas?

Arrived at 11:10a with a friend on Saturday. Found a picnic bench to sit down. At 12:05p we both looked at each other and said, "This place sucks" then got up and went inside the north end of the stadium. Watching the team do pre-game warm ups was way better than anything Maxwell Field had to offer.

It feels like someone's fenced in backyard.

Why not move it to the plaza near Gates 2 & 3? People stroll around there anyway after passing through security. Feature Cal student groups such as drama and singing. Invite the Bearettes.

I went in 2018/2019 and had a good time. There was a cover band, beer and games and giveaways that my nephew enjoyed.

Have things devolved here too? Once again a great idea with potential, run by the wrong people.

My guess is the athletic department lost a lot of money during the pandemic and had to cut costs on events like this, at least for games projected to have low attendance.

Yeah and like rent an island and invite all of the cal influencers get Ja Rule and Jello Biafra and Party Hearst and Elizabeth Holmes to run a dunking booth. Get some snow blowers and Rent some blow up igloos and beds and get some kids from the culinary academy to work the food trucks. ….wait what? This idea was already floated? Darn

Forgot, let's not forget Nickelback. Get them up on stage. Killer

You're right, a lackadaisical small gathering with a couple of folding tables and some Costco pastries is better.

That guy just got released from five years in jail. He IS looking to get back into the game.

At its best, the game day event seemed embarrassingly forced. See? Aren't we having fun?
