San Francisco 49ers vs. Dallas Cowboys

I'd like to see Mike McCarthy get the respect he finally deserves. But do I wanna see Dak get a ring before classmate Goff?

I forgot this game was California vs Texas and so I should've footed for the Niners.

The biggest takeaway of the day is that Damar Hamlin's Buffalo teammates don't find him to be inspirational

I don't think that would have mattered. . Tony Romo and Jim Nance explained that Cinci won because they were inspired because they didn't get "respect." Respect is obviously more motivating than life threatening injuries or death.

Bills remind me of the Cowboys. Josh Allen reminds me of Dak Prescott. They get a lotta love.

The Bills are a small market team but the full recipient of the NFL's hype machine- deflecting from a violent act in a violent game to football values: hope, inspiration, solidarity, love and T-shirts. This is what the league does best.

Dallas remains "America's team" not In performance but as the league's richest franchise in the citadel of football.

Josh Allen is good. Prescott, not so good

The Bills were hyped before Damar. I'm not saying Josh isn't good. He is. But he ain't all he's cracked up to be.

The only thing that matters is that the Chargers lost in a humiliating choke-like fashion, as they always do.

Both these guys over-achieved in college at less than top notch college programs, got drafted on measurables and have had unreasonable expectations placed on them based on limited success. Both these guys have high ceilings that only Josh has reached but are they really in the class of Watson, Jackson, Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes and Burrow? Maybe Allen but definitely not Prescott. I think J. Herbert, Tagovailoa and Murray are also going to suffer the same type of expectations, although all 3 DID QB for top notch college programs

Some thoughts on the title game, especially the NFC.

Although the final 4 last season were pretty elite, it feels like these 4 teams are all capable of winning an SB and that could be true moving forward for several years, although KC and Cincinnati are in more difficult cap space than the NFC teams and may not be able to sustain SB their worthy rosters much longer. I actually thought that 7 or the 8 teams left before last weekend's games, were each capable of being SB champs, the outlier being Jacksonville. And no knock on them. They are pretty good as well and should be a factor next season. Anyway, it seems like this championship Sunday is about as good as it gets when it comes to quality teams and matchups.
  • What's not to like about the two #1 seeds facing the 2 hottest teams. SF has a 12 game winning streak and Cincinnati has a 10 game winning streak.
  • Also, isn't it really 2 games pitting the #1 vs. #2 seed? I mean, had Cincinnati won the game that was cancelled--and they were winning--, they would have been the #2 seed. And there is every reason to believe they would have that game since they won the same (effectively) game a few weeks later.
  • Normally you'd have to like KC, since they have a history of success, having won 2 of the last 3 AFC championship games and playing in the last 5. But they have a gimpy QB, who makes his living escaping the pocket and Cincinnati has beaten them 3 times straight. So it's a bit hard to pick this one and Burrow was also banged up a bit last week.
  • AFC featuring 2 of the best QBs in the game, who are MVP worthy. NFC featuring 2 of the best rosters in the league.
  • Personally I'd rank these 4 teams:
  • Philadelphia
  • Cincinnati
  • KC
  • SF
  • ...if played on neutral fields. So I like Phili over SF and the other is a ?. I'm saying this as a 49er fan. I think Phili wins it all, barring injuries of course. I'm basing this on the fact that Phil is the only team that has a dominant line on both sides of the ball.
  • Both these games will be close, close enough that it will come down to the little things...
  • 3rd down conversions
  • Turnovers
  • Penalties
  • TD vs. FG
  • Red zone defense.
  • Special teams and Field position
  • Ball control/Time of possession
  • Coaching/game plan
  • Passing efficiency
  • Sacks/tackles for loss
  • Big plays vs. limiting big plays

NOTES FOR 49ER FANS:

On a neutral field, I'd say the Eagles win 6 out 10 times and they win 8 out of 10 in Phili, theoretically. But there is an avenue for the 49ers to win and it's not too far fetched.
  • It starts with D'Amico Ryans, the masterful SF DC. The talk of Ryans deserving an HC job is not just talk. Ryans has a knack for neutralizing dangerous offenses. Here is a short list of teams held in check by Ryans:
  • Rams (2021 SB champs version) 3 times!
  • Aaron Rodgers, Devante Adams and GB @ Lambou in the playoffs.
  • Dallas Cowboys -2 years in a row in the playoffs, once on the road.
  • 2021 Tennesse Titans
  • 2021 Cincinnati Bengals
  • It is rare for even playoff teams to score more than 20 points against the 49ers under Ryans. Seattle did it with a garbage time TD in the divisional round. Of course it is only 2 years of data, but it is still impressive because it involves 5 games, 3 of them on the road and several against high octane offenses.

Having Ryans as DC means the game will likely be kept within reach.

  • Second advantage is the ability to contain Hurts. The 49ers have had trouble containing mobile QBs. Yeah well that's when Dre Greenlaw (should be black and blue law) has other assignments. Look for Greenlaw to be the official spy on Hurts. Greenlaw >> Hurts in that matchup and Hurts may just decide he prefers not to run much after a couple of Greenlaw hits. Greenlaw must be careful to not get a PF when tackling hurts.
  • Third--Purdy has experience going toe to toe against Hurts, meeting him blow for blow in a close loss to Oklahoma in his college days. Purdy is particularly good at short quick passes to move the chains. The 49ers can utilize Kittle, CMC, Juice and Samuel with quick hits, creating matchup difficulties for the Phili D. Essentially Shannahan and Purdy will be a throw back to the Walsh and Montana days of the west coast offense. Purdy has a similar skill set and supporting cast as did Montana and Walsh. Matriculating down the field and controlling the ball will give the 49ers D some rest.
  • ST--SF punter Wishnowsky is really good at giving SF good field position and this Sunday could be the week that McCloud finally breaks one. McCloud made up for his KR fumble, which was more a great play by Dallas than a muff, by returning a kick into Dallas territory late in the game. That was a big play. Plus Robbie Gould does not miss FGs in the playoffs. Look for him to kick 3. If SF can get 3 FGs and 2 TDs, I think they win.
  • TOs. The 49ers should and will win the TO battle. Purdy is smart beyond his years. He is not going to take risks. Maybe one of the RBs or WRs loses one fumble but I expect SF to have 2 takeaways. It happens pretty much every week.
  • Playoff experience. Yes the Phili crowd will be loud and menacing but SF has played in Seattle and GB and Dallas and they have been fine. SF is much more ready and experienced for this game than Phili.
  • The weather--The weather won't be a factor. It will be kind of like being in Santa Clara.

Of course I have focused on the advantages the 49ers have and conveniently ignored the Eagles strengths. But, should the 49ers win, it will be because of these things. And I didn't even mention our other LB, Fred Warner, who should limit Goedert and the Phili RBs.

Should be a fun Sunday.

I actually feel like the 49ers have the best overall roster left, but they will have to go on the road in Philly and though Purdy has been amazing for a last-round rookie, everyone else has elite QBs now. Any of those guys can beat you too.

So I dunno, it's all a big tossup.

~ compare Garbers to Purdy . . . ; in Philly Sunday, Purdy starts, goes down, ACL, out a year, Jimi G comes in and takes a beating, Lance brought in to 'give him a blow', screws the pooch, Jimi G back in ftw

I think the Niners are at least equal, if not superior, to the Eagles talent-wide on both offense and defense. The Niners definitely have the advantage on special teams. Plus they have a significant coaching advantage on both offense and defense. I look for the Niners to win by 10 points, if they can minimize turnovers.
