I know this was covered on another thread, but I was wondering if there is a cheer squad (cheerleaders and song girls ) going to the Notre Dame game. What was the reason that there is no cheer team available or am l understanding this wrong?

Someone ITK on the Premium board said there's a legal issue that's blocking the team's return for now.

I don't know about it being a legal issue, but we don't have a cheerleader coach and we had a vacancy in the position that hires the cheerleader coach (since filled I believe), so it was impossible to hold team tryouts for this season. Then the USC-UCLA to the B1G problem took priority. At least that's what my only mildly interested mind absorbed from what I read about the cheerleader issue. Not sure it's 100% accurate though.

We should have sponsored the Bearettes to go. That would have been a cause I would have supported. Wish we had thought of that earlier

So, we have more than 10,000 fans at the game (actually, a lot more, from what I'm hearing) and nobody to lead them in cheers?!? This can't be the case... er, can it?

Members of the Straw Hat Band will lead some cheers, I expect.

Perhaps you should go back and read that thread before spreading such information. One (1!!) poster mentioned something about lawyers with no evidence to back it up.

It's a hiring issue.

Both BearGreg and SebastaBear indicated that both squads would return this season.

Thanks for passing along what you heard Eastern Oregon Bear

If true it's absurd. The conference situation should have no bearing on such a regular function as fielding a cheer squad. Total **** show athletic department.

> Over the course of a few months, she suffered three concussions while under the supervision of head coach Lisa Keys and assistant coach Jessica Chatto, who allegedly required Martin to attend practices and cheer in upcoming football games despite doctor's orders, the lawsuit alleges. In October 2017, Martin was diagnosed with a concussion and was instructed by her doctor to rest, according to the lawsuit..

> The injuries had lingering effects, including her being in "constant pain" and experiencing "depression and anxiety" which lead her to take an academic leave of absence. Martin says she "endured months of therapy, and continues to experience headaches, nausea, confusion and light sensitivity," according to the complaint.

The article is dated October 4, 2019.

Anyway, I could give a crap about the "stunts". Why can't we have somebody out there leading cheers and/or dancing in front of the band?!? They don't need to be stacking themselves 15 feet in the air.

This is really bad, it reflects a breakdown not just within the athletic department, but within the broader campus community that let this boneheaded cheerleading coach get away with her abysmally poor judgment and outright physical abuse of this student. The UC student health staff, the student ombudsman and other campus organizations failed her just as much as the AD did.

There might be some confusion as to who actually leads the Cal fans in cheering.

There is the group mostly female (but with some males) who perform dance and gymnastic activities.
Then there are some people both male and female who lead the fans in yelling certain cheers ("Gimme a C" etc) often these are called "Mic-Men" despite the fact that the gender designation might appear inappropriate to some people.
Unless we use the term "man or men" in a gender neutral manner such as a "foreman" in a factory or in a jury who are sometimes male and sometimes female

Performing the dance and gymnastic activities requires certain skills and can be dangerous for the participants and therefore should be performed under strict supervision.

Those who merely lead the fans in cheering (iMO these individuals are the real "cheerleaders" require much more limited skills and rarely is it dangerous (unless that cheerleader dresses up in a gorilla suit and climbs a flagpole

At the ND game in here were many impromptu Cal cheer leaders who led some classic Cal cheers even the CALIFORNIA spell out. (No not "CAL" but the entire "CALIFORNIA"). They had a better repertoire of traditional Cal cheers than many of the current Mic-Men
Maybe we can have official " Mic-Men" and impromptu "Mic-Men" at all Cal Games

The cheerleaders don't lead cheers -- the mic men do. The cheerleaders dance while the Band plays.

We still have mic men.

There are also the "dance team", sometimes called pom pom girls or song girls, who perform to musical numbers played by the band. I think people miss these the most. The young woman featured in the tryout solicitation is a dance team member.

I think the cheerleaders should lead cheers and the mic men should man mics!

Okay, I'm kidding... So, did we have mic men in South Bend? And did they have a mic?

Basically, from the stands, I want people leading cheers (or "yells", whatever... ) and the Cal Band playing, with attractive people* often dancing out in front, and a bunch of engaged fans.

* notice I said "people" instead of girls (or young women) because I'm so damn evolved
