He could have played equal to or better than Derek Carr today, minus the $121.5M contract.

Carr stat line today:

Yards: 101; Avg. 3.9; TD: 0; INT: 1 Rating: 50.3

Score Saints 24 LV 0

Unsure if you're yearning for Garbers to play as much as you are for Carr to go down. Regardless ... just as Plummer is not at fault for play of Cal's offense this year, neither is Carr for play of the Raiders offense. Both team's offensive lines are their problems - in fact each are close to the worst in their respective 'league's - all of college football and the NFL.

There are a few areas where Cal's offense is comparable to the Raiders:
  • They both have great skill players
  • They both have QBs that don't move well in the pocket.

Otherwise Carr's ineptitude in clutch situations has spanned a decade and he can't play hurt.
Meanwhile Plummer guts out 2 decent performances against 2 good teams the last 2 weeks with essentially one leg.

It is not going out on a limb to suggest Garbers could do better because like Millner vs. Oregon, Garbers is better suited to compete against a pass rush. And actually Garbers has shown himself to be a decent clutch QB in his years at Cal.

Carr has way more arm talent than Garbers but there is something wrong with his head. He's kind of like Wilcox. He works hard and looks the part but he is mentally unfit to win probably because it is too important to his ego.

Carr is actually very strong in clutch situations over his career. He leads the NFL in 4th quarter comebacks since 2015 with 23, 4 more than #2. He also has navigated being injured very well. He played through three broken bones in his back at one point.

Thank you. I stand corrected on the injury issue but your clutch is misleading because raw numbers don't accurately reflect success rate. IOW how many times has he failed in those situations as well. He may simply have more situations where he could both succeed and fail. But , regardless, I trust my eyes. I've watched a lot of Raider football. Have you?

Fine, you take Carr, who has never won a playoff game and never will, eat his $120M contract, and I'll take Marcus Mariota and his $19M contract and my'n will beat your'n.

I follow/watch the Raiders regularly. IMO anyone who blames Carr for reason they've struggled doesn't know football. In reality, give him the same HC & the same OC for 3 successive years w/skill position players everywhere & they won't lose due to lack of production from the offense. Carr has NEVER had such combo. The Raiders have had one of the WORSE overall Defenses in the NFL for 10+ years (secondary has been embarrassing since Al died in Oct. '11) Without Max Crosby, their D would be the laughingstock of the league. Instead, currently their OLine is the laughingstock of the league. Oh ... but wait ... It must be Carr's fault. Just like Cal people ... those that don't know REAL football ... it's Plummer's fault.

I have watched every game since 2002. Def agree, the denominator here is large. Either way, my eyes tell me that he's done it enough to warrant being clutch. While it didn't translate into wins, he's led several clutch drives this year against Arizona in OT, KC in regulation twice.

Just a bit of FYI; I had season tix from 70 - 81 and then again from 95 - 2012. Got to know a few coaches & a lot of the players, especially back in the 70's. I was one lucky kid in college 'cuz while a Jr. at Cal, I saw the Raiders beat the Vikings in Super Bowl 11 down at the Rose Bowl. I actually became a Raider fan when they played at Frank Youll Field in Oakland.

Goff plays better with no O Line than Carr does. AR has led the league in sacks and still performed at an exponentially higher level than Carr.

If my opinion that Carr sucks is based on me not understanding football, than so be it.

…but wait, I thought in the post game pressies Carr owns every loss because he is such a revered leader by the players.

Derek Carr is 59-75 in his career.

Except a thread on a Chase Garbers as a Raider QB is the one place where his view on Carr is more than appropriate for a Cal sports board.

Bashing Carr is one of my schticks. My public demands it. Am I a true believer?Hell yes. He sucks.

I have been a Raider fan since 1965, when I was a boy (I was born and raised in Oakland as were both my parents). My Dad had season tickets from 1968 to 1977. I have watched every game Derek Carr played in as a Raider and I rooted for him even though he drove a stake into my heart game after game.

I remained a Raider fan even when they dumped us for LA. The move to LV? No girl ever had to dump me twice. No longer a fan. I still catch every game I can for two reasons:
1. To watch them lose; and

2. To see Carr confirm again and again my contention that he sucks. He has never won a playoff game and he never will.

*Please explain what attributes Carr has that would engender jealousy in anyone other than the fact he has basically spent his career robbing the bank.

Danny P. never cried about playing with no pass protection. He scrapped himself off the ground, cinched up his flak vest and continued playing with broken ribs.

As you know,, I'm a WC native, became diehard Raider fan in 1964 when they played at Frank Youl l Field and I had OAKLAND Raider season tix from 1970 & on. I went to Super Bowl 11 when they beat the Vikings in January, 1977. When they moved to LA, I completely understood the business side of it - was bummed but oh well - mayor Lionel Wilson was at fault for it all. I flew to LA & watched them play. When they came back in '95 I was one of the first in line buying season tix again. Was happy as hell. Then the city of Oakland - this time council members & Libby Schaffare to blame - FU again. Mark Davis, as football clueless as others here are, finally got his dad the stadium he deserved. Again, I totally understand & accept the business side of it. Thru it all ... I NEVER stopped my passionate love for the team. That, to myself and my multiple Raider fan friends, is the definition of a TRUE fan. Not like that of one who jumps off the bandwagon when they leave town or suck as a team - like when he puts his head under his pillow & cry's unendlessly when his girl friend leaves him.

Your perspective of the play of a quarterback & how he plays, how you perceive his productiviy. etc... is way different then mine. Remember, I played the position - learned from D. Lamonica and the likes of Vince Ferragamo, Steve Bartkowski and Joe Roth. I come down on you for you coming down on Derek Carr because my subconscious is telling me to communicate to you about him so you will then see it differently. But hey, we all have an opinion & the right to own it ... so if expressing your dislike for anyone makes you happy - go for it! But ... you say you're no longer a Raider fan. Right? Hmmmm ... I personally think deep down inside you are a fan - a hurt one - and you're taking a bit of your bitterness out on Carr. Is the reason I said, LET IT BE.
bearister
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have no problem with your opinion other than:

1. The Raiders haven't had a serviceable bandwagon to jump on since Rich Gannon was QB;

2. I hope you are not including me with people that dumped the Raiders because they suck, because that has been the case for decades and they only lost my fandom when they left for LV;

3. I am not a Libby Schaaf or Oakland City Council fan, and I can't quote verse and chapter from the negotiations relating to building a new Raiders stadium in Oakland, but my instincts tell me at least a portion of John Oliver's argument in video below is applicable (especially in light of the reaming Oakland took on costs for Mount Davis).

4. Never shed one tear if a girl dumped me. You can't make someone like you. If you have any perception at all, you can usually see it coming and split first.

I do not desire to troll or continue to offend Raiders/Carr fans so I will drop Carr bashing from my set.

*Since the Raiders left town my favorite team has been any team Goff is on, so clearly having a winning record plays no role in my team fandom.

Just a reply to your reply of my reply to your reply of my reply to your reply:

1. I feel somewhat obligated to thank you for saying you will no longer bash Derrick Carr like you have been doing.

2. So ... You're a Rich Gannon fan, eh? Just wondering, if he was currently the Raider's quarterback, do you think they would be doing better this year from a W - L standpoint? And if Gannon was their qb during the same time Carr has been, do you think they would have been doing better?

3. I'm unsure if you're a huge Goff fan because he's a Golden Bear ...??? Or is it because you think he's as good a passer as there is & he has excellent quarterback skills?

I think you have an idea re; my perspectives about Gannon and Goff as quarterbacks - that they're certainly not at the same level as yours. And hey that's OK! But ... from viewpoint of myself & other TRUE Raider fans, you never bled silver 'n black if you're no longer a fan because they relocated!

That's all ... I will now LET IT BE.

1. Never a Gannon fan. He was mentioned because that was the last Raiders SB team….that Chucky then exposed and humiliated;

2. I like Goff as a Sturdy Golden Bear that I thoroughly enjoyed watching at Cal and I love rooting for him in the NFL. I don't feel that way about AR.

3. As far as the guy who popped off from the peanut gallery above your post, I never said Garbers was a better option than Carr, I simply said that in the shutout game against the Saints that Garbers could have played equal to or better than Carr in that game.

I suppose you could argue that Garbers would have thrown for 25 yards and lost 50-0 but I would rather wager on my contention than that one.

Same result at $120 million less salary.

It is like people a few seasons ago wining about Fox and Wilcox being paid less than the PAC-12 average in salary and thinking that was the reason Cal was not good so we had to increase their salaries. Proven coaches and players, who have winning records and success in the post season deserve big contracts. There are literally thousands of unproven coaches (and quarterbacks). When you give one a chance the contract should be very favorable to YOU. Paying bad coaches more does not make them better. It just prevents you from finding a good coach and locks you into losing.

Carr had a phenomenal senior year at Fresno, leading the FBS In passing and got his number 4 jersey (his idol was/is Brett Farve) retired at halftime on senior day.
No one is saying Garbers is better than Carr. The question is, is Carr significantly better than than average NFL QB to warrant paying him like he is? When you have a salary cap, you give up a lot for paying him like that.
