For an out of state visitor, Napa is better than Livermore, locals are more blase about the Napa experience. I would also recommend going to Sonoma, good wineries and nice old colonial Spanish town square. The key rec here is to go to wine country during a weekday, far less crowded than on weekends, especially in September. Weekends are good for doing activities or meals in SF proper or Berkeley, far less traffic.
Surfing in northern California is a bit of drag, the water being very cold. However it might be OK if there is a heat wave, which could easily happen in September. FYI Auburn fan, a "heat wave" in NorCal is when the temperature in coastal cities goes above 80F...
One fun ocean-going activity if you're into it, a bit more active than whale or shark watching, is salmon fishing out in the ocean. Usually in a small charter fishing vessel with about 7-10 other tourist/fishermen, all the material provided. You set out early at dawn and sail out in the Pacific for an hour or two in search for a salmon bank. I did it twice, and had beginner's luck, caught a 36lb monster, that the captain reeled in for me. Initially he thought it was a seal who got the bait, based on the strength of the pulling on the line.

More bad news - Northern CA is not So Cal. Maybe folks can turn you on to something but generally I would expect surfing to be a tough one, at least without a healthy drive.
Spend a day in SF. I was just there for a long weekend. The horrors of the city were WAY overblown, IMO. There is so much to do here.
From a football perspective you are catching us at a low point. We are all disgusted with our AD, Chancelor and head coach. We've just fired the most incompetent OC in the history of college football. Our D was unusually soft thanks to DL injuries that had us into our 3rd string people across the board. Similar story with the DBs. However, beware because the team actually does have talent. If the OL can be even just average and we are otherwise healthy expect a battle.

I agree with you about going to Napa. If you're traveling across country to SF for the first time and want to visit wineries, Napa Valley is the starting point. Not going there is like traveling across country to LA and going to Knots Berry Farm instead of Disneyland.
Knots is great and a great value. Lots of great wineries outside Napa that are also great values. For a visitor on their first trip, they just need to go to the premier world famous place first.

I enjoy drinking wine with dinner and can appreciate different, nice wines with different foods, but I can't picture hardly any leisure activity less enjoyable than getting in the car and driving for an hour or so just to taste different wines with a bunch of people who are trying to pretend like they are sophisticated.
That said, those who are able to appreciate this activity, good for you and too bad for me, not being able to enjoy it.
On campus, I recommend going up in the Campanile (Sather Tower) for a gorgeous view of the campus, San Francisco, Oakland, Marin County, the bay and the Golden Gate.
Then, saunter down to Sproul Plaza, where all the Free Speech kerfuffle started in the '60s. Feel free to stand on the steps of Sproul Hall and speak your mind.
The stadium is a historic, classic bowl with the Hayward earthquake fault running down the middle of the field.

Yes, I enjoy it. II is a great way to spend a day outdoors, in really nice places, tasting different wines, learning stuff. Grabbing some wine and food, sitting outside looking out over the vineyards...it doesn't suck.Big C said:

I generally don't drink alcohol at all so discerning differences between wine… lost on me completely. My wife loves it and the experience so I enjoy it that way.

Love wine tasting, though more when a student in the 80s and we would go up to Napa and tastings were free. Not as fun when it costs.
If you don't like Napa's pretentiousness, try Sonoma as part of a trip to the Russian River. Still can find small family owned wineries with the owner pouring.
We had a great time tasting old vine Zinfandels in Lodi. More like a big party. Live music, pours from the keg. BBQ. Lodi is awesome.
As a man who loves the south and southern culture, here's an advanced "welcome", and we hope you enjoy your time in Berkeley (the east bay).
While here, take in the areas around campus. Both south side and north side have individual establishments with character and culinary enjoyment. Berkeley is a very diverse city with a rich treasure trove of restaurants with international flavor. It also is home to "Top Dog" and some excellent burgers and pizza places.
On campus I also suggest going up the Campanille. The view from up there will astound you. Berkeley, and Cal have wonderful architecture to enjoy. Almost everywhere around campus, your eyes can be stimulated by design, building, shapes and materials. Take it all in.
If you can, go up into Tilden Park. If you're bringing someone (or kids), enjoy the Merry Go Round, a small steam train ride, and some foliage and views that will remain with you for a long time.
San Francisco is still a beautiful city, but it has a lot of blemishes. BE CAREFUL wherever you go. People pop out of the most unlikely places, and sadly, a lot of those people who "pop out of nowhere" aren't there to greet you. The neighborhood bars are fantastic. The waterfront area is touristy, but absolutely a must. And do not forget the "Musee Mechanique" for some fun nostalgia and stimulation. Grace Cathedral is worth every moment you can spend looking at its beauty and history. I don't think there's anything like it in the south, and it's a bit like being in Europe without the travel and expense. North Beach, Union Square, the waterfront (of course), and Golden Gate Park has something for everybody.
But most of all, enjoy Memorial Stadium.....the most beautiful football stadium in the world. Old school in design, updated inside (forgive the plastic field), and surrounded by a magnificent hillside, and views to the west that won't be forgotten. No football stadium will ever be the same after visiting our queen on the hill.
My neighbor ran track at Auburn, so "War Eagle" is alive and well, even in SoCal.

If you don't get up in the Campanili to see the view, then it will be well worth your while to climb to the top of one of stairs on the west side of the stadium to look out at the breathtaking view of the East Bay, SF Bay and Golden Gate, and San Francisco from that vantage point. I doubt there is a better view from any stadium in the country.
A little heads up on the French Laundry. Reservations are extremely hard to get and the meals, as of now, are $300 each. That's a lot of Top Dogs.ninetyfourbear said:
I'd definitely recommend going to Napa for wineries. An endless number there. Keep in mind that the city of Napa is just one city in Napa Valley. A lot of the good wineries in my opinion are north of the city along Highway 29. Definitely worth driving up that road and checking everything out. Better yet, if you can afford it, hire a driver to take you around to the wineries so you can taste as much as you'd like.
A few specific wineries:
I visited Del Dotto recently and the wine cave there is amazing.
Grgich Hills has great wine.
Frank Family Vineyard is a smaller place but really good wine.
Cakebread Cellars is also good.
Sterling Vineyards is good to visit for the gondola and views.
For food in the area, there are also lots of places. My recommendations:
French Laundry in Yountville. See if you can book now. Their related restaurant Bouchon down the street is a favorite of mine. The CIA (lol) at Greystone in St Helena has had a great restaurant in the past but it looks like they've changed it up a bit. The building is something to see.
Hopefully others will add more winery and restaurant recommendation.
This is a double leg-pulling, rare but not unheard of. Most BI denizens will catch this but the subtlety might be lost on an unsuspecting poster. There are not shops of any kind as described around the Coliseum BART station , it is definitely not wise to be there at night, and you'll have no problem seeing an A's game with the rest of the 3,000 fans. A Giants game, in the best stadium in baseball, is a good idea, though. As for Mavericks, that's where they used to hold a large wave tournament in the winter, and by large waves 30 feet and more. I have been to Alabama for a travel ball tournament for my son at the Hoover-Met complex in the Birmingham area (where they hold the SEC baseball tournament). I was so impressed how nice and clean it was. All the major shops and food places were there. I thought I was in Irvine. The people were super amicable and hospitable. However, I got one that went overboard. I was in some Whole Foods type organic market. This guy white guy came up to me and was super friendly, introduced himself, and we got to chatting. He then said to the effect of "hey, don't worry about anything. You know, I grew up in an area in Cleveland and I was the only white guy there. So I know how you feel." Spend a day in SF. I was just there for a long weekend. The horrors of the city were WAY overblown, IMO. There is so much to do here.
From a football perspective you are catching us at a low point. We are all disgusted with our AD, Chancelor and head coach. We've just fired the most incompetent OC in the history of college football. Our D was unusually soft thanks to DL injuries that had us into our 3rd string people across the board. Similar story with the DBs. However, beware because the team actually does have talent. If the OL can be even just average and we are otherwise healthy expect a battle.
How about one thread that isn't hijacked over the "breaking news" that some, fine, most, don't like the AD?

Just going to put it out there, but I was in attendance at one of the greatest sporting events in history... The Auburn-Alabama Kick-Six game. Similar to The Play, but honestly might have the edge just because of the national title implications for both teams. I have a video shot on my old iPhone 4 and it is the only video that I MAKE SURE gets transferred over when I get a new phone. I get chills every time I watch it! WDE until we get ready to whoop y'all next year!! Go Bears!

Just checked, also out of interest as I might swing by for a home game and local vacation next season, the spread is crazy, but if you book well in advance, as our Auburn visitor undoubtedly will, there are some very good options at a decent price point in the $300/night range.

Oakland Airport/Coliseum BART station has a lot of shops, farmer's market type atmosphere and things to do around it, especially at night (that's when it comes alive). Again, bring your whole family, check out an A's game, then plan on staying around there the whole day.
Too bad Berkel Berkel is not around. It was hands down the best Korean place east of Seoul itself.

Just to tag on to this post, if you're interested in surfing, bring your board to Mavericks, a little north of Half Moon Bay. If the waves look big from the shore, it's a unique optical illusion, found only in Northern California. Just paddle out and catch a wave!
