Ethan Garbers getting playing time as Thompson-Robinson is out. Had not shown much in a couple series (but Pitt was pretty much taking control even before the injury...)

Ethan managed the last couple of minutes pretty darn well! As suspected, the Ucla defense gave the game away after it was won. Good on Pitt however. DTR lost some stock with his performance perhaps. Does Ethan enter portal knowing the Bruins have some top QBs coming in next season? Can we get him?? lol.

It's been posted multiple times that Garbers has already used his one time transfer when left UW. He'd have to sit a year until he becomes a graduate student. He's not leaving ucla at this point.

I would imagine that it wouldn't be until after the spring because spring practice will probably determine the top 2 UCLA QBs. UCLA has 2 HS recruits at QB, one is highly rated. Also they have a highly rated QB transfer from Kent St. As it stands now, Martin would probably be the backup to Garbers, even though Griffin, another QB has more experience. Griffin is okay but not as much upside as Martin. Come spring I would imagine that at least the Kent St. guy will be enrolled and practicing if not at least one of the HS recruits. In such a scenario at least 3 non freshmen will be battling for QB spots. Non of them are going to want to be #3, although the Kent St. guy will probably stay anyway. If either Garbers or Martin end up 3rd on the depth chart, one of them may elect to transfer, knowing that even more QB competition will be coming in the fall. However, if there is no clearly defined winner in spring, they may all elect to stay. But it seems clear that, moving forward, UCLA will have trouble keeping all 4 talented QBs on the roster. The risk to waiting until spring is that it hurts your chances of competing for a starting job at a new school, whether it is Cal or anywhere else. I'll surprised if Martin or Duncan ever get any significant play at UCLA. Moore will get every opportunity to start and if he's not ready then they'll turn to someone with experience, either Garbers or Schlee. If the staff thought that highly of Martin they wouldn't loading up on all these quarterbacks. As I recall, Martin is a raw talent and hasn't played a bunch of football. So maybe he's just a bit too raw for that QB room. Garbers looked terrible. And if Martin isn't better than him, why would we want him? At least Modster had some strong games at UCLA before we took him on.
The UC Berkeley Bears may have to run wildcat on every down. Talk about square jaw football!
