I didn't think Colorado had that kind of $$$

They absolutely do, they were waiting for something to energize them. One my friends who has a $10K bronze buffalo statue in his backyard just gave them $2M in NIL. I have another buff friend that is of normal means that gave them $50K. While they aren't as wealthy of a fan base in terms of pure numbers as us, they have done an incredible job of courting people in their 40s/50s from when CU was rocking. Also Rick George their AD is very engaged with younger donors and seems like a really, really good guy with a winning drive.

I seem to recall that we have produced the second highest number of billionaires after Furd. We've done a terrible job grooming those relationships.

Billionaires from Cal and Stanford are generally tech billionaires who could care less about sports.

It's hard enough to convince our alumni to give for ANY cause let alone sports. Depending on how you calculate it and realizing it varies from year to year the alumni giving rate is under 10%.

I still think the REAL NIL money won't directly from individuals but from corporations. I mean, the reason USC is going to the Big 10 is because USC alums at Fox helped make that happen.

The whale's are great, but Cal also has a lot of porpoises from all eras. We need to do more to cultivate them.

If they never became Cal Sports fans and never will, this is why we always need to try and make Cal Football and Basketball games great and very affordable experiences for our undergraduate students.
Have to have an alumni plan that starts the day they first set foot on campus, maybe even before with mailings in advance.
This is why it makes sense to give free season passes to all freshmen and incoming transfers; get them hooked. Of course, we also need to improve (restore) the game day experience.

The problem is that Knucklehead Knowlton thinks free tickets would "devalue" the experience. Even a junior high school dropout crack dealer knows the benefit of giving away something to develop interest. Yes, I'm saying the Knucklehead Knowlton has less sense than a junior high dropout crack dealer.
Think more broadly. Much more broadly.

Certainly all the students at Berkeley City College, Laney and CSEB maybe every HS football team in the Bay Area? End zones should be GA/family with kids under 18 for $5. Get ''em hooked early.

Whales should be honored for their accomplishments in business with honorariums from Haas Business School presented at halftime of football games. Sit in the club boxes. Have them lead a cheer. Have them meet the players, suck them in….they may have made $billions, but they have never had the thrill of an entire stadium cheering for them…

Good summary:

"A high-profile breakup between a top QB recruit and a storied football program has thrust the messy side of NIL into the spotlight, Axios' Jeff Tracy and I write.

What's happening: Jaden Rashada, a four-star prospect and the No. 7 QB in the 2023 class, was granted a release from his letter of intent with Florida on Friday after a $13.9 million NIL deal fell through.

The deal was with Gator Collective, one of over 100 such groups across the country in which wealthy donors (boosters) pool funds to facilitate NIL deals for the schools they support, unofficially of course.

The NCAA prohibits such collectives from getting involved in recruiting, but Rashada's story shows they're doing just that, blurring the lines between endorsement deals and employment contracts.

The backdrop: This all began when Rashada originally committed to Miami in June. Five months later, he flipped to Florida, where an even bigger paycheck reportedly awaited.

June 26: Rashada commits to Miami amid reports of a $9.5 million NIL deal with Miami mega-booster John Ruiz.

Nov. 11: Rashada announces that he's flipping to Florida. This comes a day after he inks the $13.9 million deal with Gator Collective, per The Athletic ($).

Dec. 7: Gator Collective terminates Rashada's deal due to an inability to pay such a hefty sum, per SI. It's unclear if Rashada knows the deal has fallen through at this point.

Dec. 21: Rashada signs his letter of intent ahead of the High School All-American Game, where he expresses his excitement about playing for the Gators and poses for pictures with other signees.

Jan. 10-20: Rashada is not among the 16 early enrollees to report to campus in Gainesville and later requests his release from his letter of intent. Three days later, Florida grants him his release.

The big picture: NIL was meant to give student-athletes an opportunity to earn money via third-party partnerships, and most deals do exactly that (think: sponsored social media posts).

Yes, but: What keeps the NCAA up at night are deals like Rashada's, where wealthy donors are seemingly inducing recruits to sign with their school under the guise of NIL.

These "pay for play" schemes existed long before NIL, mostly in the shadows. Now it's all out in the open, with money that can easily be disguised as legit sponsorship payments.

What's next: Rashada's recruitment is back on, and TCU has emerged as a candidate to sign the highly coveted QB out of Pittsburg, California.

But don't expect $13.9 million or anything remotely close to be on the table this time.

That number shocked NIL observers when it was initially reported, and all evidence suggests it was ludicrously high."

I don't think it even makes sense to recruit high school players anymore except for the best of the best.

You are better off obtaining proven talent from the portal.

This is going to be true for the power 2 conferences. We will be the feeder/minor leagues into those programs unless we can establish ourselves as a winner.

It is a new world, still playing out.

Right now, I'd say it Is 50-50.

But generally don't bring in a HS recruit thst is not good enough to play immediately and you intend to redshirt.

Keep him and his dad the heck away from our program

I don't really get this sentiment. Maybe you know more than me. The kid agreed to go to Florida based on promises of payment. Florida has not held up its end of the bargain, so now he seems to be hesitant to go there. Would any of us do differently in our own careers? Why is this different?

Our coaches wanted this guy. Why should we keep him away from the program if he's available?
My feeling is there There are guys who want to get some money, there are guys who want "fair" money as part of a total package, then their are guys for whom money is their primary factor. Rashada appears to be in the last category. I worry those types of guys aren't for Cal. Will they care about the team? Will they get up and go to that 8am class? Will they bail the second someone offers more? The risk of extraneous issue which ultimately affect the locker room, APR, etc put me in the camp that says he isn't the right type of person for Cal, even if he is insanely talented physically

The answers to your three questions are:
1. No
2. No
3 YES!!!!!

Or maybe he'll go to Ohio State, get beat out by an even better QB, jump into the transfer portal, draw no interest from elite teams, and then try to resurrect his career at Eastern Michigan.

Based on a few minutes of web research, what I could see is that Ohio St has produced a lot of very good college QBs, who are at best marginal NFL players. Several have ended up in the CFL. Justin Fields may be the exception but the jury is still out there. I can only conclude that TOSU did a great sales job on Keinhaus.

He is very talented. In the end he will be fine. The problem he now has is that he is off cycle for the recruiting calendar and that negatively affects his potential NIL payday and playing time potential. He has some very interesting choices to make in the coming months.

Better for Cal than UW.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

I realize he's 18, but this is the stuff that drives me a little nuts. At one point Cal was his dream school. Then it was Miami. Then it was Florida. But now it is ASU. Why must they say this stuff when (understandably) the decision is really about very different things?

It would seem the NFL is drifting towards this very same principle. Many teams are giving up Draft choices for proven talent.
