People here really think we can't get to 4 wins? Wow. I understand the schedule is difficult but have some faith. Team upgraded at various positions with new coaching. We were competitive last year against:

9 win Notre Dame
9 win UCLA
11 win USC
11 win Washington

Best thing for Wilcox right now is that the bar has been lowered so much, if we go 6-6 this season, he could be able to create the narrative of "a program that has turned the corner". Then, with the help of that and a little NIL, maybe we go 7-5 in 2024 (or better, who knows?).

Basically, Wilcox is getting a rare re-do. Most coaches need to go to a different job to get that.

Wilcox is on probably his third re-do and has been given even more rope, it is unprecedented. I thought extending him out 6 more years after last year was gross incompetence, so now we have to hope he gets it right his third (or fourth?) chance. However, I actually AM hopeful this time.

chunky,

If a BI poster doubts Cal is not capable of winning four games, you have to understand that faith just doesn't do it for them anymore or they're from Missouri (you have to show them the wins). But, the stance that you stand by, that is, Cal at least should win four games, I think is surely possible.

I believe there's a better than middling chance that the Bears can beat NT, Idaho, and the furds. As for extending my beliefs to thinking Cal can also beat the Sun Devils and/or Wazzu ignores the possibility that these teams can yet (through the transfer portal, recruiting, coaching, or gained player experience/maturity) improve themselves. Assuming this turns out to be untrue, this leaves Cal beating the bruins in LA for a fourth win. I feel such a result is based upon reaching the extreme limit of my faith.

As you can see if the bruins do oink Cal (Wilcox has only won once against them), then you have a Bear team winning less than four games (3 to be exact). Maybe you're right in that for a Cal fan to think such is possible then such fan must have little faith, but now, I hope you see a valid basis for such feeling along with yours too.

Brick question to BB

Do bricks begin to spall the longer they are kept in storage?

In Cal's case, it's beginning to look like the answer to your question is yes.

I mean, Wilcox started coaching in 2017, and since then, Cal's overall seasonal record has been trending downward. In 2017 it was 5-7, in 2018 7-6, in 2019 8-5, in 2020 no season, in 2021 5-7, and finally in 2022
4-8. So, I see the longer Wilcox coaches, a belief that Cal will eventually soon crumble to 3-9 or 4-8 again is not too far off base.

As an aside, College Football News just came out with its early rankings and ranks Cal #70 out of 133 teams.

And, as you can see, they don't help Cal's case any.

Idaho is unranked .

North Texas #87 and stanfurd at #78 are the only teams its ranks lower than Cal.

The others are as follows:

ASU at #65

Wazzu #43
Auburn #37

ucla #27

The Beavs #18
Utah #16
Oregon #13
Washington #9
U$c #8

So based on the above, if Cal can get to about #45, we should be able to beat Auburn and WSU at home and go 6-6.

That seems feasible. If Spavital can produce a #40 offense and Wilcox gets back to a #50 defense.
