Can anyone tell me how to interpret the rankings in the graphic included in this link?

Why is Cal that low even if the corresponding numbers match Stanfurd?

Because it's based on an undisclosed methodology concocted by a retired TV executive that takes into account several highly subjective categories. When Cal wins there's no question we have more value than Stanford. We also very likely have more value when both teams are mediocre or bad. Only when Stanford wins big and Cal loses a lot are they more valuable to TV. This is pretty obvious to anyone who pays any attention. None of the Pac 10 teams have much reach outside their DMA, but Cal followed by Stanford probably have more than the others. This is nothing more than a measure of recent general perception of football + MBB program strength, with a slight nod to UW because they have a bigger DMA than Oregon. In other words, it's useless at best and biased at worst.
Please give to Cal Legends at https://calegends.com/calegendsdonate/donate-football/ and encourage everyone you know who loves Cal sports to do it too.

To be in the Top 1% of all NIL collectives we only need around 10% of alumni to give $300 per year. Please help spread the word. "If we don't broaden this base we're dead." - Sebastabear

It must be Cal's basketball program since everything else is fairly equal. Stanford used to have the edge on football, but not these days.

I'd be interested in why WSU is ahead of Colorado because WSU has a puny media market and not much of an Olympic sports presence.

I guess my question really is what is that table sorted by? Just his own ranking without any methodology or scoring?

Yeah I think it's sorted by a hidden rank column that's probably based on some sort of scoring. Highly suspect IMO that Stanford and Utah are so high. At least Utah has their own decent fanbase, but nobody roots for either of those schools outside of their immediate circles (students, alumni, etc.). For example BYU dominates all of Utah including SLC despite not being in the DMA. And even they have no breakthrough reach to speak of beyond LDS nationwide. ASU too to some extent. I think UofA has a much stronger value based on their MBB program.

"Thompson created a formula to measure market size, television households, football brand, win percentage, Olympic sports, fan support, and men's basketball impact."

I'm curious how they measured football brand, olympic sports, fan support, and men's basketball impact. I'd also be curious to know how these are each weighted. If equal the fact Cal is as high as it is with its win percentage and men's basketball impact says a lot.

The +DMA is the only column shown for some reason...which stands for Designated Market Area's. It is unclear why they included that information and not the rest, or anything else.

A quick aside: The Ivy League has rather lucrative broadcasting deals, outsized relative to their schools' fanbases, even for smaller revenue sports (like lacrosse). Why? High alumni household incomes and assets.

I would venture a guess that the national brand value of Stanford overall and in recent football success is simply higher than ours, and they get random eyeballs more than we do from a TV execs standpoint. Playing ND every year has an impact as well. That's a whole nation of Catholics that have this game on their calendar along with SC.
