From the article (though how many games weree in this category anyway):

Still, the sports consulting firm Navigate's modeling projects the Pac-12's average annual value at $31 million per school, barely less than the Big 12's new deal. Although the Big 12 has larger fan bases, Pac-12 games on ABC, Fox, NBC and CBS averaged 20 percent higher ratings than comparable Big 12 games (excluding both leagues' departing members) from 2014 to 2021, according to data provided to The Athletic.

"Conferences don't call schools first about realignment. Schools call conferences."

This is what I have been saying, this is due to the huge antitrust risk the conferences are now exposed to since the Supreme Court ruling in Alston.

If Cal wants into the B1G it is up to Cal administration to ask and keep asking.

The Cal administration has to get its head out of its arse first.

Sure, all the Pac 10 teams would like to give it a shot together, even with expansion, but if the money isn't there...

Furd and Cal have talked to the B1G in the past about a package deal. It is not like they are hiding or playing hard to get, but with the other eight conference teams, they are waiting for a TV offer, since Commission K thought there was big bucks coming in a new deal.

UCLA clearly has a financial incentive to have Cal join the B1G due to that pending subsidy, and SC apparently wants Cal and Furd in any west coast pod. All that sounds great, but thing is you still have to get invited.

I've long wanted to know how far those Cal/Stanfurd discussions with the B1G went? Was the pair also told "not now", as UW/UO were according to reports?

And does SC truly want us? I feel like they probably wouldn't mind but they probably don't care one way or the other.

yes, the kings of arrogance want us. They think they can look good beating us in games that their fan base can easily attend. Also helps with non-revenue sports travel costs.

Cal and Furd discussions, as I understand from one of the participants, were with everyone saying we want to see what happens, but there is a mutual interest. There also were discussions with Notre Dame and Furd way back, which went no where.

Canzano is a clown (just ask Duck and Beaver fans what they think of him), but the longer it takes to get a deal across the more smoke there that generates.

It's another "wishcasting" article from another sportswriter who hopes that the Pac will disintegrate if they just keep writing the same things about it.

Example:

Quote:

Attempting to dig out of that crater, Kliavkoff has been working cloaked in secrecy. The information vacuum and uncertainty has the schools with options checking them. And checking them again.

What's worse for Oregon and Washington leaders? Being bad partners to those in the Pac-12? Or being fiscally irresponsible to their own athletic departments? What's the best business move for Arizona, Colorado, Utah and Arizona State? Is it hoping things work out or exploring contingencies until there's hard numbers tied to the Pac-12's future?

I'm not sure there's anything wrong with the quote above. Its not "wish-casting". Its facts. We are in a crater. There has been secrecy. We would be foolish to think that UO, UW, CU and Utah aren't looking at their options.

Moreover, UCLA and USC were asked and answered these same questions. Do we act as bad partners or do we be fiscally irresponsible to the athletic department and budget.

I believe that article also questioned how long the term of the new media deal would be. Read that UO and UW would not accept anything past 4-5 years. Also very believable.

A low ball streaming option would allow an early opt-out for the valuable programs, granting the inevitable expansion of the Mountain West tier two conference.

You actually think Pete Thamel wants the league to disintegrate?! Why would he want such a thing?

It's the same thing everyone has been writing for weeks. These guys have nothing new to write, and only the same conjecture everyone else has. They're trying to make a narrative come true by repeating it over and over until it does.

Everyone who writes about this stuff regularly is rooting for car crashes, as long as none of the cars they care about are involved in the crash.

I have only listened to about 6-8 of his podcasts, but he mentioned on every one of them something about growing up in the Bay Area or San Jose and being a 49er fan. He's definitely given signs that he'd like the Pac-XX to remain and the traditional intra-conference rivalries to continue, but he also appears to be enough of a realist that we have no idea where the cards will fall when this next round is complete...or how long this next round will last.

ESPN article manages to mention every team except for Cal and Stanford. https://www.espn.com/college-football/insider/story/_/id/35798511/latest-pac-12-contracts-realignment-decisions

My prediction for us and the conference will take one of two paths:

1) The PAC-12 will dissolve and the Cal Administration will use it to significantly ratchet back athletics. We will emerge under an academics first cloak and not look back. Rugby will be our only option to watch sports when it is televised on some obscure streaming channel.

2) The dissolution of the PAC-12 will create an environment for Cal to get a doormat deal from the B1G. We will more or less get a seat at the kids table at the B1G party, Our place in the pecking order economically will ensure our bottom dwelling wanker status for 10 generations or more. Absent us leveraging NIL better than those who have traditionally cheated their way to NCAA prominence we will never have quite enough in the tank to succeed. Tedford will forever be known as our best modern and post NIL coach. He will get a statue.

Meanwhile he will lead Fresno State to new heights in the Big 12, including national attention as the best football program in Nor Cal, getting a second statue.
