Yahoo Sports just reproduced a hit piece on Pac-12 teams written by a writer for Ducks Wire.

The article attempts to answer "how does the average college football fan feel about the 12 schools in the Pac-12 on a general basis?" He then goes about ranking the Pac-12 teams into 1 of 5 spiffy tiers from a team that is liked to one that is hated by the general college football fan. Note the writer does qualify his piece by stating, "Obviously, it will differ for each individual person, but here are my projections based on overall interactions on social media, media coverage, and general vibes."

I only go into Cal's rating in any detail mainly because my suspicion thinks it's right on.

Cal - The writer explains his rating as follows:

"Does any fanbase in the nation have deep-rooted feelings about this team? They haven't been good in so long that it feels more likely that the common fan has forgotten about them rather than developed a hatred for them."

The writer drives his knife even deeper by saying, "As tough as it is to say, I don't think teams in the Pac-12 conference even think about the Golden Bears very much."

Unfortunately, this article represents the norm for Cal's national press coverage.

I would love us to be tier one, but with Wilcox at the helm for several more years alli got is MEH

I wish I could forget about the AD who brought us down to this level.

Pretty soon the east bay won't have any representation in the major sports save St Mary's basketball. Yay

Yes, your post causes me to shiver. I'm a'gittin' the funny feeling that the coming realignment could most likely limit any movement by Cal within this scale to tier 4. Does St. Mary have a football team?

So some geek who lives in mom's basement throws some crap at the wall. Completely inane, with the only notable thing being that with their success in recent years, Ducks fans and their self congratulatory coaches and administration have equaled the level of obnoxious toxicity previously reserved for their counterparts at USC. Something I didn't think was possible. Honorable mention goes to UW fans, who when they're good, can be almost as objectionable.

What you espouse may be absolutely true, but it still sounds like sour grapes from a national college fan outlook.

But, the important aspect of this media/news company is that it is part of the USA TODAY Company with a national audience. So the geek must be doing something right which is more than I can say for Cal.
