Independence is probably our best option if we do not get into the B1G this cycle (B1G is far and away what we should be shooting for long term). Partner with Stanford and Notre Dame. Stay close and maintain our rivalries and games with USC and UCLA. Apple as a media partner at the very least.

Apart from football, we should put all of our other sports in the UC dominated Big West. Big budget savings on travel.

This may be a huge opportunity. To manage football independence, outsource Cal football to an alumni run not-for profit private entity that would fire Learfield and hire (Cal alum) professional sports management and marketing with the goal of making Cal football THE team for East and North Bay (then CALIFORNIA) while restoring our traditions at the same time. Play Stanford, UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, UConn, Umass, Army and Hawaii every year. Throw in Oregon, UW, OSU and WSU and you have a pretty good schedule that maintains tradition.

Partner with Apple for live streaming and sell the other games for late broadcast slots. Get Cal alums to buy voting shares and invest. Build the brand.

With football outsourced (and paying for scholarships separately) and the Cal AD managing the other sports in the Big West, maybe football can be removed from Title IX? More savings. Our AD would be like UCSBs, but with cash donations from the privately run football corporation.
